This was a highly anticipated match, courtesy of McHale's surprise upset of the World No. 1 when the two played in Cincinnati last week. Both women possess a similar style of play, moving their opponent around the court to extract errors, only occasionally taking the initiative to end a point. After trading early service breaks, the two stayed on serve in the opening set until the final game, when Wozniacki took control. She took advantage of McHale's serving struggles to win the set, 7-5. Both players struggled with their serve in the second set, but competed well from the baseline to hold through the first seven games. With McHale serving at 3-4, Wozniacki again found an extra gear. She broke the American at love, and successfully served out the match. McHale's assessment was that Wozniacki played a stronger match this week. "I definitely think she played more aggressive this time. She was pushing me around the court more." Wozniacki maintains her undefeated record in New Haven (15-0), but McHale continues to show progress in her young career.
Around the grounds...
Only three quarterfinal matches were played, as Anabel Medina Garrigues withdrew from the tournament due to the right knee injury she suffered in her second round match against Elena Vesnina. Medina Garrigues had an MRI which showed some swelling on the knee, so she opted out of New Haven to prevent further damage that could hinder her chances at the US Open next week... The doubles draw was also dealt a blow with two walkovers. With Medina Garrigues' injury, she and partner Nuria Llagostera Vives had to withdraw, allowing the Italian team of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci a pass into the Final. Meanwhile, the world's top-ranked doubles team of Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik also withdrew, citing illness (Peschke) and injury (Srebotnik's left shoulder). With Peschke/Srebotnik's withdrawal, Natalie Grandin and Vladimira Uhlirova advanced to the semifinals... Caroline Wozniacki was sporting pink nail polish in her quarterfinal match. Tournament Director Anne Worcester asked her to wear something pink in support of the breast cancer fund raising the tournament has been supporting. Without any pink to wear, she compensated with pink nails.
