THIS! The preciousness that is Wes Anderson is completely inorganic. As far as I'm concerned, Life Aquatic ranks up there with Plan 9 from Outer Space.
Plan 9 is more fun.

So, the problem here becomes two-fold for me.

I go back and forth with Bill Murray. Both "Stripes" and "Caddyshack" are among the funniest movies ever. "Groundhog Day" is deserving of its cred. Some of his stuff on SNL was among the funniest moments of the show's history. And his appearances in some films ("Little Shop Of Horrors", "Ed Wood" and "Cradle Will Rock" spring to mind) adds greatly to the enjoyment.
But "Lost In Translation"? I never got it.

I still enjoy his movies, but not as much as I'm supposed to.

I don't think I can articulate why the first two films are so great to me and why I've disliked everything else. His style hasn't changed that much.
I'm on this train, too. My enjoyment of his movies diminishes with each one that I watch (although I liked Fantastic Mr. Fox). Watching long scenes of actors sitting in stoic silence while discordant (and sometimes awful) music plays was interesting and quirky once, but slowly becomes unbearable. The Life Aquatic was just one long sequence of these types of scenes, which is why I thought it was dull and trying too hard.
Welcome to my crazy game of fetch.

Co-sign.
Just tries way too hard.
I've yet to see Fantastic Mr Fox, but I've been told it's good by a few friends whose favourite movies I tend to like. I should check it out sometime

Anybody else hearing a lot of chatter about "Beasts of the Southern Wild"? Sounds pretty special - The Daily Beast has said the 8 year old star (Quvenzhané Wallis) turns in one of the greatest all time performances for a child actor. The film won big awards at Sundance and Cannes.
The trailer - opens the end of this month

Except for 'The Dark Knight Rises' this is my most anticipated movie of the year. I really cannot wait.

Everything I've read about it so far has made it sound completely original, beautifully filmed, with some fantastic performances. Just hope all the hype is justified.

Janis Joplin Biopic Has a Star, Director, Rights to Use Music
On the heels of buzz around Andre 3000's Jimi Hendrix biopic All Is By My Side comes news that the long-in-the-works Janis Joplin biopic has finally secured a director, a leading lady, and some serious publishing support.
According to Deadline, Joplin will be played by Tony-winning stage actress Nina Arianda, making her on-screen debut in a starring role; she won the Best Actress nod last month for her theatrical part in Venus in Fur, but has also played supporting parts in films like Woody Allen's Midnight In Paris (as Carol) and the surprisingly well-liked Tower Heist (as Miss Iovenko). Sean Durkin, the director whose first (and awfully good) major film Martha Marcy May Marlene essentially pwned Sundance earlier this year (he got a Dramatic Directing Award for it), will helm the new film, an accomplishment which he says took him and his collaborators 12 years "trying to put an indie film together."
It gets better — unlike the Hendrix doc, which can include Beatles covers but no actual Hendrix music, the Joplin picture will feature rights aplenty. Not only does the film, which has an extra-indie budget of $20 million and will be backed in part by the producers of Noah Baumbach's The Squid and the Whale, feature "exclusive use of 21 of Joplin's best-known songs," Arianda singing all of them; Durkin has also secured "the life rights and arrangements of [Joplin's] backing band, Big Brother and the Holding Company" as well as those for a collection of the singer's written letters, called Love, Janis, that was published in 2001, 31 years after her death, by her sister Laura Joplin. He's also wielding rights to Rolling Stone reporter David Dalton's Joplin heart wrenching multimedia biography Piece of My Heart, which he compiled after following her on tour over the six months that led up to her death. In other words, this film is packing a serious copyright punch in an age where that kind of thing is often quite hard to come by.
While those unfamiliar with the annals of Broadway might not be as psyched about Arianda's film debut as the wailing icon as they were about Stacks' casting, they may take comfort in the fact that this particular job won't be manned by Pink, Renee Zellweger, Amy Adams, or even Zooey Deschanel, as previously speculated (the latter will be a little busy with another icon sooner or later, anyway).

Zooey = Loretta. It's going to happen
From everything I have heard about Nina Arianda, she's a Streep-like star just waiting to blow up. And this could be the material to let her do just that. I'm real excited about this.

I saw Nina in Venus in Fur- and she indeed was wonderful- incredible charisma. I however would not at all have thought of her for Janis Joplin (including that I didn't know she sang, assuming that she will, which I HOPE she will.) But, this could truly be wonderful.

I know this movie might not sound very appealing to some people. But if you don't mind some crude humor and a lot of references to drug usage I definitely recommend seeing "Ted" in theaters. Definitely the funniest movie out right now and possibly of the year. The title character is absolutely hysterical and the whole theater was dying of laughter the entire time. I cannot recommend the movie enough, but definitely do not bring along any under 17 year olds with you.

Late to the Moonrise Kingdom conversation, but as a Wes Anderson junkie I'll dump in my two cents anyway.
Rushmore = Classic (one of my all time favorites)
Bottle Rocket = Love
Fantastic Mr Fox = Love
Life Aquatic = Like a lot
Darjeeling Limited = Like, but don't get so excited about
Royal Tenenbaums = Don't Like
Moonrise Kingdom = Liked it, but given the reviews of everyone saying it's his best effort since Rushmore, gotta say I was a little disappointed. Maybe I'll feel differently when I re-watch it. I think I would have loved it if it weren't for the main character - I just didn't connect with the actor (Jared whatever). Loved everything else about it.
