In 1993, the debut single “What’s My Name?” catapaulted rapper Snoop Dogg to fame. But if you ask him that question now, he’ll have a different answer. Snoop Dogg changed his name to “Snoop Lion” after a spiritual awakening in Jamaica this February, which he described to reporters at a press conference on Monday.
So, no more D-O-double-G. No more Doggfather or Dogghouse or “Woof!” — which, presumably, will be replaced with a roar. Snoop Lion has been working on a reggae album, ”Reincarnated,” the recording of which is being chronicled in a documentary film that premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Snoop told reporters that he was rechristened Snoop Lion by a Rastafarian priest.
“I want to bury Snoop Dogg, and become Snoop Lion,” he told reporters, according to news.com.au. “I didn't know that until I went to the temple, where the High Priest asked me what my name was, and I said, ‘Snoop Dogg.’ And he looked me in my eyes and said, ‘No more. You are the light; you are the lion.’ From that moment on, it's like I had started to understand why I was there.”

Re: The Music Thread
I think most people on this board know I'm a HUGE Aaliyah fan, so when I heard that a new posthumous single was coming out, I freaked
The new single features Drake, who is apparently supposed to executive produce the new album.
I'm meh about Drake's part, but I love the song and the production/beat.
++++
On a related note, apparently Timbaland, who has been a long-time collaborator and friend of Aaliyah, wasn't notified about a new Aaliyah album being in the works, which has caused quite a bit of controversy. Lots of fans are upset that Timbaland, who helped craft Aaliyah's signature sound, might not be involved with the project.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...n_1746807.html
This is what Timbaland said after hearing about Drake talking about potentially executive producing a new Aaliyah album, back in April:
""I know they trying to drop some Aaliyah records, but if he do it, it should be with me and Missy. The proper way for him to do that would be for me, him and Missy to be all on the record. But to put it on his record, would just not be right."
However, according to this site, Drake is only on that one song, and he isn't executive producing. Most of the production will go to the person who produced the new single, Noah "40" Shebib. Also according to that site, Timbaland will produce two songs.
"According to our source, "Enough Said" was released by Aaliyah's own label, Blackground Records, which is run by her uncle Barry Hankerson. The song wasn't leaked by Drake. As for how involved Drake is, I'm hearing he's only on one song right now. But that Noah "40? Shebib is producing a majority of the tracks. I'm actually looking forward to what 40 does with these unreleased vocals. His sound seems like a good match. But for all the fans who cant imagine a Aaliyah project without the input of Timbaland and Missy Elliott...great news! I'm hearing that Tim is getting involved. So far I'm hearing he's producing 2 songs. Hopefully there will be more and Missy will be in there too! Timbaland recent told me that he and Missy are already done recording their joint album. (Miss Info TV)"
So I'm a little confused
+++++
My opinion, as a fan of her music, is that I don't really think it's necessary that Timbaland is involved in any projects involving Aaliyah. Sure, it would be nice to include him on a track or two, but I don't think it's necessary to include him on all of them. He's not as popular now as he was in the 90s and early 00s.
I think it's only natural to want to bring in people who are popular right now to help make the music the best it can be.
Besides, Aaliyah was already shifting away from Timbaland and Missy-produced music. Her third/last album only had two or three songs that were produced by Timbaland and one that was written by/produced by Missy Elliott, and it wasn't even specifically written for that album (Aaliyah had mentioned that they finished the song "I Care 4 U," which was produced by Timbaland and written by Missy Elliott right around the time that One in A Million was being mastered, so they couldn't put it on that album, hence why it ended up on her third album).
The majority of the songs on that album ended up being produced by other people, and it was executive produced by Aaliyah and Barry Hankerson, her uncle and the head of her label.
Anyway, I'm just gonna enjoy any new music of her's that's released

Exactly! At least Drake's producer is producing hits. I feel like Timbaland is just jealous. He wants to recreate former glory.
Like I said, I wouldn't mind if he produced one or two songs on the album, but I wouldn't want him producing everything.
Most of Aaliyah's songs on her third/last album were produced by someone else anyway, so it's not like she couldn't make music without him.

Wyclef Jean, Kid Rock, and Journey to Perform at RNC 2012 Kick Off in Tampa
With the Republican National Convention only three days away, Tampa, Florida, is teeming with excitement about which celebrity guests will grace the arenas and auditoriums of this year’s host city.
The RNC kick-off event on Monday night boasts appearances by country singer Rodney Atkins, a Busch Gardens acrobatic show, an act by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleaders, Karla Davis from The Voice, and American Idol star Shannon Magrane. Convention attendees are enthusiastic about performances by musical artists Kid Rock, Trace Adkins, Camp Freddy, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Journey, Wyclef Jean, the Zac Brown Band, and others.
Not everyone will be lucky enough to attend these shows. Organizers have confirmed that concerts by Kid Rock, Gavin McGraw, and Trace Adkins will be strictly invite-only. Among the non-musical guests are Ann Romney and Rosario Dawson, who are expected to make public appearances.
On Tuesday, country singer Trace Adkins is expected to perform for an invite-only crowd. Kid Rock’s Wednesday performance will be a private one, but fans can still enjoy the concert from outside Liberty Plaza — as the rocker’s shows tend to be loud.
The 1980s sensation, Journey, will wrap up the week of musical performances on Thursday alongside the Zac Brown Band. This event is for VIP guests, but people can still enjoy the atmosphere at a party zone designated for the public.
Also on the invite-only concert list is rock artist Gavin DeGraw. On Tuesday, the singer/songwriter will lead the Presidential Convention Charity Benefit, produced in association with the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and the Recording Industry Association of America. The organization that is hosting this event, Musicians on Call, gives wounded soldiers access to live concerts in Veteran’s Affairs hospitals nationwide.
It’s unclear if Camp Freddy will perform for the public, or just for private donors on Monday. Camp Freddy is a cover band made up of Dave Navarro and Chris Chaney of Jane's Addiction, Matt Sorum of Guns N Roses, Billy Morrison of The Cult and Donovan Leitch. The band is famous for wowing their guests — so watch out for a big-name surprise guest on stage.
Also rumored to appear are musicians Ronnie Dunn of Brooks & Dunn, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robert Randolph and Night Ranger.
Convention-goers look forward to public appearances by Ann Romney and Rosario Dawson. Romney will attend a fundraiser for GOP Senate candidate Connie Mack at the Hyatt Regency Tampa on Tuesday. Actress Dawson will speak at a "Red, White y Tu" event hosted by the Hispanic Leadership Network.

Anyone else listening to Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti? The jangly guitars and harmonies on the first single off their new CD remind me a bit of Girls, but they also do old school soul covers, 80s like synth songs, and a whole lot of other genres.
This is the song I'm really enjoying right now, called "Only In My Dreams"

Add me to the list of Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti fans.
Though, Ariel's AWFUL live.

My girls have a new song out! . Sort of. It's a collaboration with David Guetta.
I listened to a snippet in mid-august on amazon, and I liked what I heard.
First dance collaboration where Tegan is the one singing lead, I think.

Wow, a friend just sent me this video on Facebook, and it might possibly be the worst song I've ever heard. It's got language (and twerking):

Have tix for Peter Gabriel's first US Stop on his "Back To Front" tour tonight. As part of the show, he is performing the entire "So" album, with the band he toured with back in 1987 (this is the 25th anniversary of "So"'s release). Gabriel is by far my favorite performer to see live, his shows are always outstanding, his bands always great, and I've never left feeling less than elated after seeing him.
Many acts have that one song that much of the audience will sing, in whole, or part, along with - Gabriel has two - "Solesbury Hill" is always a major highlight, especially when 18,000 fans are singing "my heart going boom-boom-boom". And he almost always closes his shows with "Biko", which makes for a rather solemn end note, but again, he involves the entire audience in a sing-along.
Something interesting about this tour - every show is being recorded live, and as you exit, you can purchased a USB of the concert. Not quite sure how that is going to work, but it's a pretty interesting concept. There have been any number of shows I have seen over the years that I left totally immersed in the artist and performance, and would love to have owned something like this.

Love xx. They remind me a lot of Portishead, which is fine because "Dummy" is one of my all time favorite CDs.
