I believe there were a few big reasons why they traded Fielder: First, he had 1 home run and 3 RBIs over the past two postseasons, and zero of each in 2013. Fielder didn't seem concerned or bothered by this lack of production during interviews which didn't set well with fans, and probably the organization too. Also, shedding the Fielder contract will free up some extra cash to pursue an extension for Cabrera, possibly Scherzer, and bullpen/LF help. Finally, this gives the Tigers more flexibility. With this trade, the Tigers can now move Cabrera back to 1B, keep Victor at DH while occasionally spelling Cabrera at 1B allowing him to DH. They also can now will have their top prospect Nick Castellanos be their every day 3B, which is his natural position. Speed has been an issue for the Tigers, and gaining Kinsler and losing Fielder will help this tremendously, plus they get younger with Castellanos.
