    Re: The MLB Thread

at last, my Phillies are showing some signs of life. Finally take a series (even if it was only the Reds). Now we're home for 7 straight games this week, time to start getting into contention. With Howard and Utley finally showing signs of life, we're about ready to make a move.

With dismal hitting continuing, the Rangers managed to pull out another win over Oakland to take the series.

Baseball doesn't often produce the high octane levels of dazzle that you see in other team sports, like basketball and hockey, where there's constant motion and play-making by typically even forces [excepting the power play and free-throw scenarios]. Baseball favours the defense ... just imagine how tough it would be to score in football if the offense was outnumbered by defense 9:1, or 9:4 in the rarest circumstance ... so much so that a batting failure rate of only 65% is celebrated.

But there are other dynamics in play in baseball, and when an offensive burst takes place, there's nothing to compare with it. Watching the Red Sox rattle off four successive home runs the other day against the Yankees was spectacular. One for the ages, as the saying goes.

It's these rarest of occurences that stay in our memory, much more so than momentarily spectacular slam dunks and/or nifty goals that are routinely generated in hockey and baseball.

    Standings have been updated.

    What's hot?

Boston maintains their lead in the AL East, while the Yankees fall to dead last. Moose's Phillies have finally snapped out of their lackluster play and overtaken D.C. for the fourth spot in the NL East on a 4 game win-streak. San Francisco has also made a move from last place to third in the NL West. The NL Central is in a dead heat, and the Mets and Dodgers maintain their holds on the best record in baseball.

WRT the Phillies, the one-two punch of Utley and Howard are finally waking up after a snoozer of a start. And the bullpen (which everyone knew was going to be a problem) is actually doing something these last couple of days. Shame we had to pull Myers out of the starting rotation, but we were lucky going in to the season that we had 6 starters.

Phillies were leading 4-2 going into the 9th (they are at home)...Cole Hamels had pitched a great game up to this point. They bring in 6 Fingered Alfonseco (our bullpen is decimated), who proceeds to give up 3 runs.

So its the bottom of the 9th, and our bullpen has very likely cost us another game. It's maddening how this keeps happening.

9th inning, 2 outs, and J-Ro (Jimmy Rollins) comes to the plate, hits a triple which also ends in a error, allowing ollins to score. And we go etra innings.

    Sometimes, I love baseball.
