NEWPORT, RI -- The International Tennis Hall of Fame has announced that five-time Grand Slam singles champion Martina Hingis will play in the Hall of Fame Classic scheduled for Sunday, July 13 at 10am. Hingis joins Michael Chang - his first appearance on court after his official Hall of Fame induction on Saturday, July 12 - and Hall of Famer Stan Smith. Former professional tennis stars Todd Martin and Tom Gullikson are also confirmed to play in the event.
Martina Hingis was the first person from Switzerland to attain the World No. 1 ranking, and is one of only five women players to hold both the singles and doubles No. 1 ranking. She won a total of 15 Grand Slam titles - five singles, nine doubles and one mixed. In a career spanning 15 years, the 27-year-old captured 43 singles titles and 37 doubles titles and is fourth on the all-time women’s roster in career prize money, winning over $20 million dollars. Hingis played for her country in Fed Cup competition 1995-98, leading Switzerland to their only Fed Cup final appearance in 1998. This will be Hingis’ first appearance playing on the legendary grass courts of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame Classic consists of exhibition matches beginning at 10am on Bill Talbert Stadium Court at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame Classic is a separately ticketed tennis session that will be played prior to the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championship singles and doubles finals, starting at 2pm.
Tickets for the Hall of Fame Classic are $35 each for Court Chairs and $27.50 each for South Stand tickets. A discounted South Stand combo ticket, that includes the Hall of Fame Classic and Sunday’s Campbell’s Championship Final matches, is available for $57.50. Tickets are currently on sale for all sessions of the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships July 7-13, including the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony scheduled for Saturday, July 12 -- are also available online at www.tennisfame.com or by calling (866) 914-FAME.
Proceeds from the Hall of Fame Classic benefit the Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation, which funds support programs for brain tumor patients and their families, and the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
