2020 French Open Bracket Prediction Challenge

Entry or Revision deadline is the start of tournament play: 11:00AM in Paris, France on Sunday the 27th. Note what time that is for you locally.

Entry Form: Deadline Start of play on day one
[Please note there is some delay in placing qualifiers! If you do enter beforehand, please remember to try to revisit and re-submit your bracket once qualifiers are placed so those names show up properly in your entry. Brackets can be edited from the score tracking page before the start of play as long as your cookies are intact/match]

    What is it?
This is a separate prediction contest for Slam events. Predict the full brackets for ATP and/or WTA events, and earn bonus points in later rounds for guessing or getting close to game totals for matches from the Quarterfinals on. This IS a medal awarding contest. A medal will be awarded to the overall score leader for each WTA and ATP top scorers.

    How does it work?
After the bracket is finalized and prior to the first round of play, participants select match winners for the full bracket. Additionally, participants are asked to guess how many games will be played in each of the QF, SF, and finals matches. Brackets for WTA and ATP events are separate.

    Points are awarded as follows:
Each correct bracket pick (having the correct player in that part of the draw) awards one point for each slot correctly filled for the first round. The second round results increase to 2 points each, third round 3 points each, and so on. This forms the majority of the overall prediction score.

Bonus points are awarded for how close you come to game totals in each of those matches. This is regardless of who ends up actually contesting them, so you can still earn points here even if your player picks are off.
5 bonus points for getting the exact game count in that match
4 for being within one game
3 for being within 3 games
2 for being within 5 games
and 1 point for being within 7 games
If a retirement takes place, the number of games played until the retirement is the 'correct' answer for that match, and a walkover is treated as playing 0 games.
Prediction and bonus points are added together to form a final score for the event.

There will be a pick tracker so you can follow scoring as it occurs, complete with some plots of the data and breakdowns of choices in real time. Other player picks are not visible to you until after the deadline passes.

What do I need to do to participate?
Nothing beforehand as long as you have a valid TAT account and are logged in.
Entries will need to be made before the start of main draw play and a thread will be up in order to do that at least one day prior to the start of first round play.
Entries may be redone as many times as you like up until the deadline (start of play the first day).

As before, any feedback is welcome.

This thread is intended for discussion and questions regarding the challenge.

Thanks, and good luck to all!

Men's qualifiers placed. Hopefully women's will be updated shortly... I'll try that again in a few hours time.

Re: 2020 French Open Bracket Prediction Challenge

After the first round of play:

toulops got 46 of 64 first round WTA matches right and leads there. Just one point ahead of JazzNU, and followed by a tie between Charlie02123, tenedab, and vexchaps in third.

Meanwhile, patrick has mirrored the same prediction ratio of 46/64 on the men's side for the lead. Followed by Omegadoom, Sluggo-13, Togtdyalttai, and toulops all tied in second at one point off.

Still way too early, but I'm always impressed by first round predictions in particular.

Post Round 2, patrick still leads the ATP with a round-best 21/32 matches projected accurately.

Meanwhile, Sluggo-13 leads the WTA after posting a best of Round 2 18/32 correct predictions.

    Post QF check-in:

patrick still leads the ATP contest with 155 to second place 151

Meanwhile, vexchaps has a strong lead on the WTA contest with 117 to a few tied in second at only 109.

I'm tied for 3rd, so I took a look to see if I had any possible shot, or if anyone did at all. As far as I can tell, four people still have a shot before the semifinals.

The only things left that can make a difference are the Kenin/Kvitova semifinal, and the three game score bonus predictions.

Vexchaps has a big lead at 117, but if Kenin wins the SF, James7 will move up to 115, so it'll be a horse race using their predictions for # of games. Jatagen will still have have a slight chance with almost exactly correct game scores.

If Kvitova win the semifinal, then it comes down to vexchaps and yours truly, but I'd be 10 points behind, and have to really nail the game scores.

I made a little table with the contenders current scores, SF2 player, and games scores for SF1, SF2, and F.

    vexchaps 117 Kvitova 25 28 31
    James7 109 Kenin 19 24 19
    Charlie02123 107 Kvitova 20 20 20
    jatgen 107 -none- 32 22 24

Re: 2020 French Open Bracket Prediction Challenge

Me and jatagen are both out. It's down to vexchaps and James, and their game predictions for the final.

Looks like the current total should be

James with 119 points, and a prediction of 19 games in the final

vexchaps with 118 points, and a prediction of 31 games in the final

    ...

I thiiiiiink you get ties at 26 games and 37 or 38 games. vexchaps needs to be in the middle of that to win. James needs to be lower or higher. (disclaimer that this could all be wildly wrong)

Best of luck to vexchaps and James!

Re: 2020 French Open Bracket Prediction Challenge

Patrick holds onto his lead in the ATP contest ahead of the final.

Daveg is in position to jump ahead if Djokovic wins the final, likely somewhat insenstive to scoreline (except maybe if patrick gets his game count prediction exactly right there).
Meanwhile Togtdyalttai can threaten to overtake patrick with a Nadal win if the game count in the final is somewhere narrowly very near 30.

vexchaps can win the WTA contest ahead of me if we are close to a long final there. He predicted 31 games, while I predicted 19. There is a two point margin between us.

Re: 2020 French Open Bracket Prediction Challenge

Congratulations to Patrick for winning the ATP contest by a single point over Togtdyalttai. Came very close in the end.

On the WTA side I edged out vexchaps in the end.

Thanks for participating in this very odd year!
