Halep-Pliskova is one of my favorite match ups in the WTA. It's a fairly competitive h2h (7-4 Halep?) and a huge contrast in styles. I also think their 2017 RG semifinal is hugely underrated, and one of the better WTA clay matches in the last several years.

This Shapovalov-Schwartzman match has been great quality, lots of extended rallies. Shapovalov has been much more patient than he often is, waiting for an opportunity to unleash a down-the-line winner. But Schwarzman has been an absolute bulldog holding on. Every time Shapovalov breaks, it seems Schwartzman breaks right back.

Approaching the three-hour mark, it's 5-all in the third set with each player having won 104 points.

Shapo served for the match and was broken. He's down 1-3 in the TB. Youzhny was worried he'd get called for coaching...

There are thunderstorms and rain forecasted for Rome for the next week. I hope they'll be able to get the finals in. I wonder how long players would be willing to hang out in Rome with RG starting in a week.

Denis is getting closer and closer to being a complete player, and not just a spectacular shot maker. He's still at least a year away from that, though, I feel. But he's on the right path, it seems.

Is it my imagination, or could this tournament have broken the record for breaks of serve?
I obviously know that the serve is less of a weapon on clay than it is on hard court or grass... but, man - it seems that there were more breaks than holds in Rome - both among the women as well as the men. It's more common for breaks to occurr in the women's game, of course - but this week, it was even more than usual. And it was happening a whole lot with the men, too. No-one could hold serve anywhere near consistently, it seems...

Halep won the title. Pliskova retired down 6-0, 2-1. WTA hasn't said for sure what the injury is, but cited the wrapped left thigh and her low serving stats in the first set (50% first serves).

Diego breaks Djokovic to open the match. So nice to see him playing well after his US Open R1 loss from 2 sets to love.

Ugh, Novak was just a smidge better than Diego in the first. Diego served to stay in at 5-6, went down love-40, got it to 30, but couldn't hang on. Great fight so far.

First injury retirement of Pliskova's career.

I'm watching the replay of Halep vs KaPlis now. Pliskova had the physio look at her lower back. Did she have this issue in NY when she lost early in the tournament? The upper thigh wrap looked like the one everyone in NY was wearing for one reason or another.

Well played by Diego, but too much to ask.
Nothing to write home about for Novak, but he keeps piling on the records.
    Face it. It's the apocalypse.

They're saying that Pliskova didn't appear to be injured yesterday and had no wrap on her thigh. All Halep was doing is playing her how you should play her - make her move. Have they said what the injury is?

She was clearly hampered if you watches the match. Also I give her a benefit of a doubt because she has never retired in a match before. Very few others can claim that.

Her not being injured yesterday has got nothing to do with it, has it? Yesterday she was perfectly fine and played superbly.
