    Great strokes. Smash. WTA

There are few that have mastered this stroke. The current crop does not use it a lot, preferring to back-pedal and take a swinging volley. So this is the smallest selection.

Martina Navratilova. Legend has it (ok, she told the story) that she once hit a BH smash during practice. It was not great. Nancy Lieberman told her “if you back pedal and switch under the shot, you don’t have to hit a BH smash. Hit your regular smash” (paraphrase). Martina never hit a BH smash again. Which was Ok.
Hana Mandlikova. When you live at the net, you need this shot. She back-pedaled as well as Martina. A gorgeous shot.
Helena Sukova. For such a tall woman, she had great lift when she jumped for the smash. Then again, she had legs like rockets.
Steffi Graf. She put it away almost with fury. Although I once saw her at Wimby whiffing one smash completely (against ASV).
Serena Williams. Almost with disdain. As if saying “c’mon, give me something to work with”
Venus Williams. Although mostly she hits a high forehand volley. But she crushes it.
Petra Kvitova. Something about that Czech school, again.

    Honorary mention.
Nobody comes to mind. So please, let me know.

    Re: Great strokes. Smash. WTA

Probably not fair, but I somehow mentally associate Serena with an overhead Smash more than any other WTA player, so she got my vote here.

It's just what I picture her doing when she's brought to mind.

Like if someone says Roddick or Ivo or Isner I mentally picture each of them serving.

I went with Graf since this was smash. Today's players tend to spend much more time on the swinging volley.

I will admit I am surprised by this result.

Why? I thought it would be either Graf or Serena.

I thought it would be between Martina and Serena.
