    Re: WTA P Dubai 2/17 - 2/22 2020

The wheels are quickly coming off of Svitolina. Another poor showing, and I think the commentators said she's still looking for her first top 40 win of the year. Yikes!

    Re: WTA P Dubai 2/17 - 2/22 2020

Kenin just lost to a surging Rybakina who wasn't fazed by her "intimidation" tactics (Croft's words not mine).

there was an interesting moment when Rybakina, who had been criticized by Croft for being too passive, tried to make a point with her coach who told her "don't talk back and listen to me".

Svitolina, Bencic, Kenin, Yastremska, and Muchova all out with Sabalenka as a maybe right now. This was a great field, but that's a lot of upsets.

She shouldn't be losing 6-2 6-1 to anyone in the world. Something is up.

She was on a different continent 24 hours ago. Give her a break!

We have the peak tennis result of the decade so far. Belinda Bencic won the first 19 points of the match against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to lead 4-0 40-0, 5 points from a golden set.

The final score: 1-6 6-1 6-1 to Pavlyuchenkova.
    Well that's bizarre.

    Re: WTA P Dubai 2/17 - 2/22 2020

    The Halep-Jabeur match was strange.

Jabeur was down 6-3 in the third set tiebreak, saved the first match point and hit a service winner that was called out on the second one. She challenged and it was in, but the umpire unfairly made them replay the point even though the out call came after Halep hit it. Jabeur then hit the back of the line on a groundstroke in a neutral point and had that one called out, too. She challenged it, and then hit an unreturnable serve for 6-5. Halep then missed a first-serve ace by less than an inch, challenging the call unsuccessfullly, and Jabeur attacked the weak second serve to save match point No. 3. Rattled, Halep hit a wayward shot on the next point to give Jabeur match point on her own serve .... And then Jabeur choked horribly.

She dumped a forehand into the middle of the net on her first shot after the serve. She dumped a forehand into the middle of the net on the first shot after her next serve. And she hit a shot about five feet long down her fourth match point.

Halep correctly admitted she was lucky to win. Jabeur hit her off the court in the first set, went away while losing 10 off the next 13 games and then got it back together with help from some uncharacteristic bad errors from Halep, all the while in a Fed Cup-like atmosphere with Tunisians screaming for Jabeur and the Romanians screaming for Halep. Entertaining, although the tennis was not as good as the commentators kept saying it was.

Clijsters was one of the fastest players on tour in her first and second incarnations. She moved like a gazelle even if her body said otherwise.

In her on-court interview after the match, they asked her what was different now. Sounds like she's been enjoying herself the last few years (her social media suggests this as well), but maybe not working as hard as she could've been. She said she has a new team - new coach, new trainer, new physio - and it's made a big difference, but then she said, and repeated herself so I think it's the biggie, she's focusing on being a professional day in and day out. Sounds like she's taking it more seriously now.

I'm afraid I have to give this a "post-of-the-week" award. Dry has almost certainly won more of these than anyone else.

That's a rough way to lose for Petra Martic. Had set points in both sets in the regular games, but played two poor tiebreaks and that's it. Rybakina is really good at tiebreaks though, she's got nerves of steel when she's down from what I can tell. About to lose the set? Tiebreak? She becomes super dialed in. Serve is on fire and cuts out the errors.
