My hypothesis is that China had the most total deaths until mid-to-late April, but we'll never know for certain. As for per capita deaths, once Italy took off they probably passed China quickly.

Trump's rally at Mt. Rushmore: I'm most concerned about the risk of forest fires after all those fireworks. I've hiked extensively in the pine forests of the Black Hills of South Dakota. This time of year it is very hot and very dry there. I still remember how incredibly dry all the undergrowth and pine needles on the ground were. I would not even light a match in those woods given how dry they were. My understanding has been that they quit doing summer fireworks in the Black Hills in 2010 due to forest-fire risk. That risk is certainly not less this year.

So the risk of this being a super-spreader event for the virus is only part of what we need to worry about. GH

I've seen the videos from Mt. Rushmore, as have all of you by now...no social-distancing in the crowd and very few masks. I'd say fewer masks than at the Tulsa rally. Trump's entourage did not practice social-distancing within that group, but they stayed well away from the crowd. The fact that it was outside helps the virus risk a little, but all the shouting and cheering probably balanced that out to make this very dangerous.

No evidence of forest fires so far, but I'm not sure we can say that risk is completely gone.

"Beyond irresponsible" is the softest way I would have worded my opinion. GH

    The current situation in Europe

Seems like the epicenter is now in the Southeast of the continent. Some countries improving, but many (including Switzerland) show concerning trends.

I'm not sure now, but about 2 weeks ago the corresponding number in US was 120.

Do notice that the overall incidence level is decreasing not increasing as might seem because of more "red" countries. That's due to hot spots being in smaller countries and the bigger ones are getting better (in particular UK, Italy, Turkey and Germany).

Here is a risk map for US on county level. In this case it's daily new cases as a 7 day rolling average relative to 100k inhabitants as of June 29th.

You can find the live version here: https://globalepidemics.org/key-metr...d-suppression/

Unfortunately it doesn't seem easy to compare these data with European ones I posted earlier...

Even though Sweden has decreased the last week, with six months of numbers behind us it seems that their strategy did not work that well.

Talking about covid-19 precautions I went to hairdressers today. Everyone has to wear a mask except during brief moments when it's hindering the actual haircut. At the entrance everyone has to use hand disinfectant and customers have to register beforehand and give full name and phone number in case there is an outbreak and it's necessary to trace contacts. Seemed a pretty solid operation given the circumstances.

Note that infection levels here moderately low, I wouldn't go if I were in say Miami now.

Sure. If their contagion rate drops precipitously in a couple of weeks, they can declare success. But right now, they are 2-6, 2-6, one break of serve down in the third with COVID serving. It does not look good.

Some of the jumps in Balkan states is very alarming. Croatia, Montenegro specifically. It's possible they just ramped up testing though.

    This broke last night...

    krcraft @krcraft

Guifoyle and Don Jr. were at a party for 100 in the Hamptons last Saturday.
    https://pagesix.com/2020/06/29/donal...ons-party/amp/

A Hamptons insider was stunned to arrive at a house in Bridgehampton on Saturday night to find a packed party that looked “as if COVID had never happened” — with Donald Trump Jr. and girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle among the revelers.

Our spy estimated there were about 100 partiers, who our source says were maskless, at the bash at the 51 Sandpiper Lane mansion, hosted by famed Hamptons builder Joe Farrell, who owns the pricey pile and is selling one down the road for $15 million. The event — which comes days after Long Island entered Phase Three of reopening and while COVID cases surge in some parts of the country — had a caterer and uniformed bartenders.

A source close to Don Jr. told us that the pair only stayed for about an hour, and that it was an outdoor event on the building’s roof (though our original source said the party was both inside and outside).

Our source claims Ramona Singer also attended Saturday’s shindig. Neither she nor Farrell responded to our requests for comment.

Meanwhile, it seems that guests are being uncharacteristically cagey about the party — Don Jr., Guilfoyle, Farrell and Singer have all been mum on the party on their social media.

Kimberly Guilfoyle -- Donald Trump Jr.'s girlfriend and top Trump campaign official -- tests positive for coronavirus

Updated 6:47 AM ET, Sat July 4, 2020

(CNN)Kimberly Guilfoyle -- the girlfriend of Donald Trump Jr. and a top fundraiser for the Trump campaign -- has tested positive for coronavirus, according to a top official for the committee she leads.

"After testing positive, Kimberly was immediately isolated to limit any exposure," said Sergio Gor, chief of staff for the Trump Victory Finance Committee. "She's doing well, and will be retested to ensure the diagnosis is correct since she's asymptomatic but as a precaution will cancel all upcoming events. Donald Trump Jr was tested negative, but as a precaution is also self isolating and is canceling all public events."

Guilfoyle tested positive in South Dakota before she was set to attend the President's event at Mount Rushmore, a person familiar with the matter and a campaign source familiar with the matter said.

Guilfoyle was not with the President and Donald Trump Jr. has so far tested negative, the person familiar with the matter said. That source said Guilfoyle had not had recent contact with the President, but she was in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and was backstage for his rally there and, was also at his event in Phoenix.
Guilfoyle's positive test was first reported by The New York Times.

A former Fox News personality, Guilfoyle assumed the role earlier this year of national chairwoman of the Trump Victory Finance Committee, where she is credited with expanding its ranks of fundraisers.

Guilfoyle and Trump Jr. had been in the upper Plains region hosting high-dollar fundraisers for several days, people familiar with the matter said.

Guilfoyle has "been with a lot of the campaign donors" in recent days, one source familiar with the matter said.
Billed as a "Mountain West Ranch Retreat," one event occurred in Gallatin Gateway, Montana, from Tuesday until Thursday, according to one of the people.

Another event was billed as the "Rapid City Roundup Retreat" in Rapid City, South Dakota, from Thursday to Friday.
The people said Guilfoyle was not seen wearing a mask during the events.

She is not the first person close to the President to test positive for the virus. A member of the Navy who serves as one of Trump's personal valets tested positive in May. Additionally, eight Trump advance team staffers who were in Tulsa tested positive for coronavirus.

All of Trump's campaign staffers who worked on the rally in Tulsa were quarantining last week after interacting with several colleagues who later tested positive for coronavirus, CNN reported at the time. Campaign aides are tested before events, per the Trump campaign's safety protocols.

The news of Guilfoyle's test comes not long after Trump Jr. posted images that falsely suggested that masks and face coverings don't help prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus.

Experts say wearing a mask or other face covering could reduce the transmission of Covid-19 by as much as 50%.
Earlier this week, Trump Jr. posted an image on Facebook of a lab where scientists were working in certain hazmat suits known as positive pressure suits. Text on the image says, "This is what virologist wear to protect themselves from a virus. Don't worry, though. Your bandana probably works too."

The image is from 2017 and was taken at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in Wuhan in central China's Hubei province.

In posting the image, Trump Jr. wrote, "Solid point." The post has received more than 40,000 shares and over 69,000 reactions on Facebook.

Montana GOP ticket sidelined after exposure to COVID-positive Trump, Jr. girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle: report
Published 19 mins ago on July 4, 2020By Bob Brigham

Susan and I had a great time last night with Donald Trump Jr here in Montana! It's wonderful to see so much support for President Trump in Big Sky Country! via FB

The Montana Republican Party is facing a crisis after multiple members of the ticket traveled to South Dakota for Donald Trump’s rally and were potentially exposed to COVID-19.

“Montana gubernatorial candidate Rep. Greg Gianforte and his running mate, Kristen Juras, confirmed Saturday they will self-quarantine after Gianforte’s wife, Susan, and Juras attended an event last week with Kimberly Guilfoyle, who has since tested positive for COVID-19,” KBZK-TV reported Saturday.

Gianforte is currently Montana’s lone congressional representative. He is not running for reelection as he’s running for governor. In June, the Montana GOP nominated State Auditor Matt Rosendale to replace him.

“Staff with Republican Congressional candidate Matt Rosendale’s campaign confirmed Saturday that Rosendale was also at the event Guilfoyle attended and is self-quarantining while awaiting the results of a COVID-19 test,” KBZK reported. “According to the campaign, Rosendale will self-quarantine and cancel events for two weeks, regardless of test results, “out of an abundance of caution.”

With Rosendale running for Congress, he seat as Auditor is also open in 2020. Republicans nominated Troy Downing to succeed him.

Downing’s campaign admitted to KBZK that he also attended the event and “will avoid personal contact and all public functions until a negative test result can be confirmed.”
