Re: 'AO Qualies Draws, OoP & Discussion 1/14/20 - 1/18/20

And I'm not sure if it's related, but unlike every other Grand Slam tournament, or to be honest, really any tournament on the schedule that uses social media, the Aus Open hasn't posted a thing about Qualifying except the delays and the scheduling. Not scores, pictures of players winning, "we've got a tight match" kind of commentary or anything of the like. It's all the top players all the time.

I honestly don't remember what they've done in the past, but it is a 180 from what every other tournament does. If you don't promote your event, who will? They aren't doing anything to get eyes on Qualifying, which is odd and feels intentional.

The AO website has had stories about qualifying though.

Brayden Schnur quickly walked this back, but I didn't mind it. It's been on my mind lately what the Big 3 and Serena have done, proactively, to leave the sport better for everyone than how they found it. Have they used their political capital within the sport to change it for the good? Venus lobbying for equal prize money at Wimbledon stands out to me over anything the other four have done for the common good.

Djokovic as President of the ATP Players Council HAS gotten higher prize money for all players, but this is all a bit marred with the recent ATP leadership/Gimelstob scandals.

And that really is not much or certainly not enough. It isn't truly promotion the way they typically do it these days, because you have to seek out their website and few do. With social media, they can engage you, draw you in. Let you know without you seeking it out that Player X won in Qualifying and next up is Player Y and that Player Z is starting a 2nd set tiebreak or whatever.

They are doing every last bit of this to promote the big name players that are only practicing right now, but did the charity event the other night. And kept putting up posts about the #RallyforRelief (and they weren't posts focused on raising money) for a full day after it was over. They are doing it today with the draw, they have post after post detailing early round matchups. Nothing about Qualifying unless it's "hey, play is starting now or play is delayed by 3 hours today." That's it.

ESPN, not TC, is now airing Qualie play. It looks like they're covering all the courts.

Tennis Channel does have coverage on right now as well. Is ESPN doing anything on TV? I've only seen it on ESPN+ so far (except for the Rally for Relief).
