    Re: Horse Racing Random Random

My favorite races of all are the ones where I am watching the entire stretch run, and several different horses are in a position to win, and I have no clue actually will win until someone finally gets to the wire first.

That's what happened about an hour ago at Gulfstream Park West in Florida. What a wild ride... And these were all 2-year-old fillies.

Today's Breeders' Cup races were all dedicated to the juveniles (2-year-olds)--three races on turf, 2 on dirt. Fortunately, no incidents.

Here is the Juvenile Turf Sprint--pedigree of the winner at https://www.pedigreequery.com/four+wheel+drive6. (American Pharoah on a More Than Ready broodmare.)

    Re: Horse Racing Random Random

And here's the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (1 1/16 mile). Maxfield would have been the favorite, but he scratched a few days ago (right front leg injury). That might be for the best since the Breeder's Cup Juvenile winner never does well in the Kentucky Derby as a 3-year-old.

This was a HUGE surprise. I believe the odds at post for the winner were something like 45-1. Pedigree of the winner: https://www.pedigreequery.com/storm+the+court2. (Court Vision on a Tejano Run broodmare.)

Tomorrow is when the "adults" take the track with Horse of the Year potentially on line for some contenders. It will all end with the Breeders' Cup Classic, which couldn't possibly be more wide open.

It was a phenomenal day of racing at Santa Anita--until the final race of the day, the Breeder's Cup Classic, when disaster finally struck. I'll wait to read news about Mongolian Groom and then decide whether or not to post the races. I'll be shocked if that ends well, based on what I saw in the stretch.

And Mongolian Groom is a gelding.

I am reading fractures (note: plural) in the lower portion of his cannon bone and upper portion of his pastern.

    Re: Horse Racing Random Random

UPDATED: Mongolian Groom, who suffered what an on-call veterinarian called a "serious" injury in the stretch of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, was euthanized later, the Breeders' Cup announced Saturday night.

    The statement, in full:

"Mongolian Groom sustained an injury in the Breeders’ Cup Classic today and was immediately attended to by an expert team of veterinarians, led by board certified veterinary surgeon Dr. Ryan Carpenter. During their evaluation at the equine hospital at Santa Anita, they observed a serious fracture to his left hind limb. Radiographs were taken and a complete evaluation was performed. Given the extent of the injury, Dr. Carpenter, in consultation with Dr. Wayne McIlwraith, veterinary surgeon and professor emeritus at Colorado State University, Dr. Rick Arthur, Equine Medical Director of the California Horse Racing Board, and attending veterinarian Dr. Vince Baker, recommended humane euthanasia of Mongolian Groom.

    Re: Horse Racing Random Random

Given today's tragedy involving Mongolian Groom, I have decided to post only four of today's races at the Breeder's Cup--just because each of these four races had an interesting subplot.

The first is today's Santa Anita 4, the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, which is run at 7 furlongs.

Fun fact: Here is the pedigree for the winner. Not that, in the fourth generation, she goes back to Affirmed on the sire's side and Alydar on the dam's side. It's the first time I've ever seen both Affirmed and Alydar show up in the same pedigree: https://www.pedigreequery.com/covfefe2.

This was the 8th race of the day--the Breeders Cup Sprint. This was important because it had Horse of the Year implications, especially after it was over.

In the 10th race of the day, Midnight Bixou had the chance to finish her season undefeated and solidify her case for Horse of the Year. But the Argentinian horse had different ideas. This was the race I was waiting for.

And the 11th race, run just before the tragic Classic, almost certainly revealed the 2019 Horse of the Year, who hasn't lost a race since 2017.

I am giving very serious consideration to buying a 1% interest in three yearling thoroughbreds with potential to run as 2-year-olds.

Please talk me out of it.
