Re: '19 Wmbldn Day 1 OoP & Discussion
Day 1 has a wealth of potential to be a spectacular day of tennis.
But I'll say it... I'm dreading Venus/Gauff.

Just watching a bit in my lunch break at pen, nothing untoward happening. Biggest shock so far would be Svitolina winning in straight sets ha. I’m loving Stan’s T-shirt though

Sabalenka the first top 10 lady to drop a set.
Kontaveit (20) and Martic (24) are in the 3rd of their respective matches.

Rybarikova puts Sabalenka back in her misery. Pretty straightforward.

Re: '19 Wmbldn Day 1 OoP & Discussion
Halep's first-round win could prove pivotal in this tournament. Cahill said she was pretty nervous because she is superstitious about opening a new court (she lost in the first match on the new Louis Armstrong at the US Open) and didn't know much about Sasnovich except that she beat Kvitova at Wimbledon last year. So it was a tricky match for her, and tight at 4 and 4, and she came through it with a strong finish. Might be a confidence-builder.

Simona was 2-5 down in the second, so good on her to win it straights as it could have been a far trickier encounter.

Re: '19 Wmbldn Day 1 OoP & Discussion
ESPN LA showed Novak/Kholi. So they have the feed for Centre Court. Osaka came next.
So they go to court 1 to show Zverev.
They simply will not show women's tennis unless it is Maria or Serena. They simply won't.Missing winter...

Re: '19 Wmbldn Day 1 OoP & Discussion
What are the odds that FAA would draw Canadians in his first two Grand Slam main-draw matches? Crazy.
I can't believe he's #6 in the odds. He's exciting and incredibly promising and it won't surprise me if he wins a few matches, but come on.Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug.

Re: '19 Wmbldn Day 1 OoP & Discussion
Gotta be honest, i've never really noticed this. I believe people here have paid more attention to it and talked about it, but I didn't follow the patterns. This is infuriating. Glad you brought it up. I can understand if the matches are well underway and switching to the better match, regardless of gender. But to make the choice based on gender, apparently, is unconscionable. Osaka is a bigger star than Zverev by any measure.
Edit: I wonder if this is regional. I've been watching ESPN3, so I didn't notice. My friend who has been watching ESPN all da y in Florida said he hasn't seen Sascha all day and Osaka is on.Last edited by MeganFernandez; 07-01-2019 at 09:22 AM.

Re: '19 Wmbldn Day 1 OoP & Discussion
Rybarikova, the semifinalist from 2 years ago. I expected this and I'd assume others did as well. Rybarikova gets little coverage but given how little she's been around the last year, I was assuming she's been playing through or starting to come back from an injury plagued year and ignored her ranking. I treated her like I would Alison Riske.

Re: '19 Wmbldn Day 1 OoP & Discussion
Rybarikova can ruin anyones day when she's in the mood. This was not a total surprise. Sabalenka has a lot of work to do.
