    SHARAPOVA, MARIA
Yikes. She has only played a few matches since the US Open, although she had a decent run in Australia, to the fourth round. Hope this isn't the end for her but hard to see her in the Top 10 again.

I had her retiring this year in our 2019 predictions thread. Due to injuries.
That shoulder is not getting any better.

Lots of solid top 10 wins, but she's never been fully healthy since returning.

She's also not a player who can peak with a limited schedule, because her strokes are way too hitchy to just show up at slams without lots of matches under her belt.

I've always said her best case scenario is a slam semi. It looks like a quarter (last year's FO) might be the best she can do. I don't think she'll retire this year, though. She'll at least take a stab at 2020 for one more French Open and Olympics.

I highly doubt she's retiring. She needs a big result that helps to show she wasn't supremely aided by the meldonium and she has yet to accomplish that. I know people on here seem to dismiss it and act like no biggie, but Maria is known for fighting til the very end of a match, her competitiveness is always pointed out. And yet, the main reason athletes take the drug is because it helps with endurance and recovery. She has a lot to prove and hasn't done much proving since her suspension. She'll give it at least another year if not two I think. Conversely, if the results are less like AO and more like they have been at times in the last year, she might keep proclaiming injury even if it is minor as a way to bow out similar to what appeared happened at the end of 2018 and not contend with what the middling results post-meldonium really means.

And you guys know you always kill me with the "since returning" like she's Kvitova coming back from a bad injury from the attack.

You are so much more diplomatic than I am.

And what if the meldonium was supremely helping her?

No one wants to talk about that because that would mean that her slam wins are fraudulent and should've been taken away. If she had come back going deep in tournaments and maybe winning a big one or two I wouldn't have an argument. The fact that they've gone back to the shoulder as a reason for her less than stellar performance speaks volumes to me. Then again I've never been a fan so my opinion means nothing.

Is there really any question that it was?
