I was a year too soon on the Murray retirement and foolishly didnít predict it for this year.

    3. Who wins womens' majors (name and number only, not specifics)
    4. First-time major champions - men and women
    5. Breakthrough player ATP? WTA?

    7. Who, besides Djokovic, holds the #1 ranking at any point in 2019?
    8. How many WTA players hold #1 in 2019? Bonus points for naming them.
    9. Comeback player of the year ATP? WTA?
    10. How many grand slam main draws will Peter Polansky enter via a LL slot?
    11. How many daytime matches will Roger Federer play at the Australian Open? 2 (even if Federer plays a 3rd one, people with 2 gets points)
    12. Highest ranked player under age 22 at year-end ATP? WTA?
    13. Biggest rankings drop for a top-40 (based on 2018 year end ranking) player ATP? WTA?

    Predict the storyline:
    14. Bryan/Bryan/Sock (can include Sock's singles year)
    15. Sharapova
    16. Serena
    17. Andy Murray
    18. Azarenka
    19. The Serving "Shot Clock"
    20. Davis Cup - Do big name players play? Do people watch?

    21. Make one random unlikely prediction, on or off court (the more unlikely, the more points it's worth)

2 questions are basically done with answer in bold.

And with the end of the year almost here, time to check how we did:
    1. Year end #1 ATP? WTA? Novak and Kerber. Missed them both. Glad about Novak but Angie's disappearing act was puzzling. 0 pts
    2. How many majors will Djokovic win? Who else wins mens' majors? At least 2, probably 3, has a really good shot at getting the slam. Rafa at RG is the stumbling block. Not bad. I will give myself 5 points.
    3. Who wins womens' majors (name and number only, not specifics). Svitolina, Kerber, unpredictable 1 and unpredictable 2 (Sabalenka and some 2019 version of Ostapenko). Nope, nope and nope. The coping out with UNPREDICTABLE and then naming two players = 0 Pts
    4. First-time major champions - men and women. None for the men. Zverev maybe gets a 10% chance of doing it. Women: Svitolina, Sabalenka. 5 pts for getting the men right.
    5. Breakthrough player ATP? WTA? If by breakthrough we mean cracks the top 20, no one in the ATP. Women: Kontaveit. She is improving. Wrong in both counts. Berretini counts for me, Kontaveit's looks fooled me. 0 Pts
    6. Biggest retirement ATP? WTA? Murray. This time for sure. Women: Sharapova (I guess I am just wishing that). Venus is getting there. Year not over but none of the three mentioned are looking that way. 0 Pts
    7. Who, besides Djokovic, holds the #1 ranking at any point in 2019? No one. He will strangle hold the ranking. WROOOOONG. O pts
    8. How many WTA players hold #1 in 2019? Bonus points for naming them. 3. Halep, Kerber, Sloane. Wrong. 0 Pts
    9. Comeback player of the year ATP? WTA? ATP: Tomic. Just to get us mad. WTA: Stosur. Wrong. 0 Pts
    10. How many grand slam main draws will Peter Polansky enter via a LL slot? None. Streak will be over. 10 Pts simply to count something.
    11. How many daytime matches will Roger Federer play at the Australian Open? 2. He will lose in the second one. Got it right, didn't I? 10 Pts
    12. Highest ranked player under age 22 at year-end ATP? WTA? Tsisipas/ Osaka. How did I get this one? 10 Pts
    13. Biggest rankings drop for a top-40 (based on 2018 year end ranking) player ATP? WTA? Fognini (he is on his way out), Sharapova (which will be why she retires). I think Sharaboba qualifies, right? 5 points

    Predict the storyline:
    14. Bryan/Bryan/Sock (can include Sock's singles year). Sock is out of the picture here. Mike and Bob will play the whole year together. 10 Points
    15. Sharapova. Will retire. Fear factor is gone, won't win enough to make it worth wasting time on a court when she can rack $100MM with her off court enterprises. Hasn't retired, the rest is spot on. 5 Pts
    16. Serena. Will win W but will play so few tournaments she will not be in the #1 hunt. Will melt down at the USO again and blame everybody but herself for what happened. Did not win W and that USO Final was not a meltdown just by 5į. 5 Pts
    17. Andy Murray. Retirement. That hip is not evolving well. Wrong. He is back. 0 Pts
    18. Azarenka. Will get pregnant again. 0 Pts
    19. The Serving "Shot Clock". Everybody will adapt. In an effort from Rafa to keep within the time frame, he will speed up his routine, slap the elastics of his underwear too fast and get a groin/hip injury. Got it. 10 Pts
    20. Davis Cup - Do big name players play? Do people watch? When Croatia (sans Cilic) plays Argentina (sans Delpo) at the Caja Magica, with roughly 100 spectators in the stands, Dwight Davis' spectral laughter will be heard loud and clear. Pique will have to ask Shakira to bail him out. For next week, but I will be right. 10 Pts

    21. Make one random unlikely prediction, on or off court (the more unlikely, the more points it's worth). Either at the Aussie or the USO one player will completely faint on court due to the heat. Wrong. Climate Change is a hoax

    75 Points. Could be worse.

Liking this post, for it's hilarity. Who can predict much with any accuracy, ATP or WTA? Maybe only that some player will have a meltdown and/or default in every tournament we are allowed to watch.

    Re: 2019 Predictions Thread

Here's my score now that the year is done. This is fun to look back on!

    1. Year end #1 ATP? WTA? Nadal and Svitolina Half right thanks to Nadal. 5 points.
    2. How many majors will Djokovic win? Who else wins mens' majors? 1. Nadal (1), Zverev (1), Khachanov (1)Since Nadal and Djokovic each won 1, I'll give myself half credit. 5 points.
    3. Who wins womens' majors (name and number only, not specifics) Svitolina (2), Kerber (1), Serena Williams (1) Not even close. 0 points.
    4. First-time major champions - men and women Zverev, Thiem, Svitolina 0 points.
    5. Breakthrough player ATP? WTA? Khachanov and SabalenkaEeek. 0 points.
    6. Biggest retirement ATP? WTA? Murray and Wozniacki Murray retired, but came back. Close, but 0 points.
    7. Who, besides Djokovic, holds the #1 ranking at any point in 2019? Nadal 10 points.
    8. How many WTA players hold #1 in 2019? Bonus points for naming them. 3: Halep, Svitolina, and Kerber Since 3 players held it and I listed 1, we'll go with 3 points
    9. Comeback player of the year ATP? WTA? Raonic and Azarenka Nope. 0 points.
    10. How many grand slam main draws will Peter Polansky enter via a LL slot? 0 I'll take it. 10 points.
    11. How many daytime matches will Roger Federer play at the Australian Open? 1 Wrong. 0 points
    12. Highest ranked player under age 22 at year-end ATP? WTA? Tsitipas and Sabalenka Go Tsitsipas! 5 points
    13. Biggest rankings drop for a top-40 (based on 2018 year end ranking) player ATP? WTA? Marco Cecchinato and Barbora Strycova Cecchinato dropped pretty far, but not Strycova. Let's say 3 points.

    Predict the storyline:
    14. Bryan/Bryan/Sock (can include Sock's singles year) Bryans play the full year together and win 2 masters events but 0 slams. Sock wins doubles titles with at least 2 different partners but no slams. In singles, Sock finishes ranked between 20 and 40 The Bryans piece was very close. They only won 1 masters event, but the rest was good. Sock's part was completely wrong haha. 3 points
    15. Sharapova Has an above-average year including 1 QF or better at a slam. Finishes between 11 and 20 in the rankings I was pretty far off here. 0 points.
    16. Serena Plays roughly 10 tournaments. Wins either Wimbledon or the Australian Open and reaches at least the semis in another slam. Finishes ranked between 5-10. She played 8 tournaments so I was close. She didn't win either AO or W, but did reach at least the SFs at the US Open and finished ranked #10. Not bad overall. 7 points.
    17. Andy Murray Retires due to injury. Unable to regain his previous level. He retired, but came back. Seems to be on the upswing. 1 point.
    18. Azarenka Pulls off a couple top 5 upsets but produces inconsistent results. Makes 2 slam QFs or better, but no wins. Finishes in the top 20, but not the top 10. Way wrong. 0 points
    19. The Serving "Shot Clock" Largely well-received by players and fans. Seems to be accurate. I'll ding myself a point due to Kyrgios' rant in Cincy. 9 points.
    20. Davis Cup - Do big name players play? Do people watch? Nadal commits to playing because it is in Spain, but withdraws due to injury. 2 of the top 10 play. Few people watch. Instead, Laver Cup maintains its position as the premier men's team competition. Nadal did play, but most of the rest of the top 10 didn't. ATP Cup might give Laver Cup a run for its money among team events. 1 point.

    21. Make one random unlikely prediction, on or off court (the more unlikely, the more points it's worth) Del Potro fails to win a single tournament. This actually happened! 10 points

    Total of 72 points.
