    2019 Predictions Thread

    1. Year end #1 ATP? WTA?

    4. First-time major champions - men and women
    5. Breakthrough player ATP? WTA?
    6. Biggest retirement ATP? WTA?
    7. Who, besides Djokovic, holds the #1 ranking at any point in 2019?
    8. How many WTA players hold #1 in 2019? Bonus points for naming them.
    9. Comeback player of the year ATP? WTA?
    10. How many grand slam main draws will Peter Polansky enter via a LL slot?
    11. How many daytime matches will Roger Federer play at the Australian Open?
    12. Highest ranked player under age 22 at year-end ATP? WTA?
    13. Biggest rankings drop for a top-40 (based on 2018 year end ranking) player ATP? WTA?

    Predict the storyline:
    14. Bryan/Bryan/Sock (can include Sock's singles year)
    15. Sharapova
    16. Serena
    17. Andy Murray
    18. Azarenka
    19. The Serving "Shot Clock"
    20. Davis Cup - Do big name players play? Do people watch?

    21. Make one random unlikely prediction, on or off court (the more unlikely, the more points it's worth)
I put in the work and wanted it so badly but this guy is the best for a reason. He is such a complete player ... maybe I'll just punch him or something, I don't know. - Andy Roddick

    1. Year end #1 ATP? WTA? Novak and Kerber
    2. How many majors will Djokovic win? Who else wins mens' majors? At least 2, probably 3, has a really good shot at getting the slam. Rafa at RG is the stumbling block
    3. Who wins womens' majors (name and number only, not specifics). Svitolina, Kerber, unpredictable 1 and unpredictable 2 (Sabalenka and some 2019 version of Ostapenko)
    4. First-time major champions - men and women. None for the men. Zverev maybe gets a 10% chance of doing it. Women: Svitolina, Sabalenka.
    5. Breakthrough player ATP? WTA? If by breakthrough we mean cracks the top 20, no one in the ATP. Women: Kontaveit. She is improving.
    6. Biggest retirement ATP? WTA? Murray. This time for sure. Women: Sharapova (I guess I am just wishing that). Venus is getting there.
    7. Who, besides Djokovic, holds the #1 ranking at any point in 2019? No one. He will strangle hold the ranking.
    8. How many WTA players hold #1 in 2019? Bonus points for naming them. 3. Halep, Kerber, Sloane.
    9. Comeback player of the year ATP? WTA? ATP: Tomic. Just to get us mad. WTA: Stosur.
    10. How many grand slam main draws will Peter Polansky enter via a LL slot? None. Streak will be over.
    11. How many daytime matches will Roger Federer play at the Australian Open? 2. He will lose in the second one.
    12. Highest ranked player under age 22 at year-end ATP? WTA? Tsisipas/ Osaka
    13. Biggest rankings drop for a top-40 (based on 2018 year end ranking) player ATP? WTA? Fognini (he is on his way out), Sharapova (which will be why she retires).

    Predict the storyline:
    14. Bryan/Bryan/Sock (can include Sock's singles year). Sock is out of the picture here. Mike and Bob will play the whole year together.
    15. Sharapova. Will retire. Fear factor is gone, won't win enough to make it worth wasting time on a court when she can rack $100MM with her off court enterprises.
    16. Serena. Will win W but will play so few tournaments she will not be in the #1 hunt. Will melt down at the USO again and blame everybody but herself for what happened.
    17. Andy Murray. Retirement. That hip is not evolving well.
    18. Azarenka. Will get pregnant again.
    19. The Serving "Shot Clock". Everybody will adapt. In an effort from Rafa to keep within the time frame, he will speed up his routine, slap the elastics of his underwear too fast and get a groin/hip injury.
    20. Davis Cup - Do big name players play? Do people watch? When Croatia (sans Cilic) plays Argentina (sans Delpo) at the Caja Magica, with roughly 100 spectators in the stands, Dwight Davis' spectral laughter will be heard loud and clear. Pique will have to ask Shakira to bail him out.

    21. Make one random unlikely prediction, on or off court (the more unlikely, the more points it's worth). Either at the Aussie or the USO one player will completely faint on court due to the heat.
    My shot.

Is the consensus that Caroline's arthritis will make it impossible for her to be competitive? I haven't heard her really address the future and don't know much about the disease. That would suck since the monkey is finally off her back

    Re: 2019 Predictions Thread

I think she has done what she has set out to do in her career. Motivation for more might not be there.

    Re: 2019 Predictions Thread

I don't think it is the arthritis or the motivation. With the incredible parity she will have a rough time stringing victories. So she will remain a highly ranked player but I don't see her winning enough to challenge for the top spot or prizes.

    Re: 2019 Predictions Thread

    1. Year end #1 ATP? WTA?
    Novak. Halep.

    2. How many majors will Djokovic win? Who else wins mens' majors?
    2 for Nole. Rafa.

    3. Who wins womens' majors (name and number only, not specifics)
    Halep 1. Osaka 1. Serena 1. Stephens 1

    4. First-time major champions - men and women
    None on either tour

    5. Breakthrough player ATP? WTA?
    Sabalenka. Coric

    6. Biggest retirement ATP? WTA?
No big retirements since they're all waiting for Tokyo 2020. Karlovic maybe. Venus at most if her year is horrific.

    7. Who, besides Djokovic, holds the #1 ranking at any point in 2019?
No one, he defends practically nothing until Wimbledon. Roger doesn't play enough and Rafa usually doesn't do well enough after July.

    8. How many WTA players hold #1 in 2019? Bonus points for naming them.
    Halep. Kerber. Osaka. Wozniacki.

    9. Comeback player of the year ATP? WTA?
    Azarenka/Muguruza. Berdych/Wawrinka

    10. How many grand slam main draws will Peter Polansky enter via a LL slot?
    none

    11. How many daytime matches will Roger Federer play at the Australian Open?
    2

    12. Highest ranked player under age 22 at year-end ATP? WTA?
    Tsitsipas. Osaka

    13. Biggest rankings drop for a top-40 (based on 2018 year end ranking) player ATP? WTA?
    Venus or Sharapova. Cecchinato

    Predict the storyline:
    14. Bryan/Bryan/Sock (can include Sock's singles year): win two slams
    15. Sharapova: mediocre results. She'll drag on until Tokyo, then if it's still dire, it's bye-bye.
    16. Serena: wins a slam or two. If one's at the USO, there'll be some umpire-linesperson drama.
    17. Andy Murray: is lucky if he can play the full year. Maybe a couple of later rounds at 2 slams.
    18. Azarenka: gains traction but does not contend for the big titles.
    19. The Serving "Shot Clock": stays irrelevant
    20. Davis Cup - Do big name players play? Do people watch?: Some big name will play (is the date already set?), people watch but not in the numbers they had hoped for.

    21. Make one random unlikely prediction, on or off court (the more unlikely, the more points it's worth)
Roger or Nole get caught in some sort of scandal.

    11. How many daytime matches will Roger Federer play at the Australian Open? 3 (at his age, the eyes are better in daylight)
    12. Highest ranked player under age 22 at year-end ATP? WTA? will Zverev still be under 22? otherwise Tsitsipas, Osaka (if still under 22) otherwise Sabalenka

    Predict the storyline:
