Re: '18 USO Day 5 OoP & Discussion

Roof is closing. Knee is taped. Tough day at the office for Rafa.

The cliche is right. It is not that you have to play against the three monsters at a very high level. It is that you have to keep it up for so long.

If Khachanov was a step and a half faster, this match would be done

In Wertheim's seed report, he listed Khachanov as "the best player casual fans have never heard of."

That certainly won't be true after this match. The crowd is loving both players.

The next next gen is knocking. Fed-Kyrgios tomorrow should be interesting.

By now the Old Gen will simply say: "We got old, kids".
It will not be the Next Gen to beat them. It will be time.

I feel like there's an "if" clause with almost every player not named Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, Murray, and Wawrinka. "IF" he was faster, served better, had more spin, a better backhand, forehand... then he'd have really pushed Top 5 player in that match and maybe won it. And yet here we are, same group winning almost every single GS since 2005. Unless you're Delpo, Cilic, and possibly a healthy Tsonga, it doesn't seem that all the tools are in one package to stand up to them when still playing near prime levels.

I'm good with that since I do enjoy most of the Top 5 (can you guess my least fave?). But that "if" is a constant for the last decade I'd say with every other player.

Well that would be great. Starting to get tired of saying, "No, Karen is a man...Yes, I'm serious."

If they changed the entire Davis Cup, they can change the ATP rules and have Isner only play tie-breaks. Not for him, but for the fans.
    What misery.

True. But it still has to come in the form of someone stepping up.

Don't forget the mental edge those guys have. Just when you think someone's got them - Khachanov serving for a two set lead, for example - they find a way to win matches when other players have let downs, and even more impressively they do as well at lower level tournaments as they do at the majors. They consistently find ways to motivate themselves to play their best tennis.
