This match might be the perfect example of what good clay court tennis looks like. Really entertaining stuff so far.

For real. Thiem up 2 sets the hard way. Amazing it's not a one set all.

Very generous of Rafa to give DelPo a tennis lesson. It's an absolute clinic out there.

But is Del Potro actually learning anything?

Not to get in court with Nadal?

    That was ridiculous.
Thiem takes one set? Or takes one set to 6-4?

63 64 60 was the scoreline when Nadal beat Thiem last year in SF round. Does Thiem improve on that? I say yes but not by much.

Re: '18 RG Day 13 OoP & Discussion

I think Thiem can beat Rafa.

Del Potro is not quick enough to play with Rafa, and it always amazes me that commentators never mention court speed as the No. 1 requirement to hang with him on clay. If you can't track down his forehand down the line and get it back deep, you have no shot to even play with him.

The second requirement, of course, is massive groundstrokes, and Thiem has them on both sides along with excellent quickness.

Combine those two ingredients, and you get the guys who are capable of staying with Nadal on clay. Djokovic, Fognini and Thiem embody those characteristics and are the only guys with any success against Rafa on clay in the last several years.

It's silly to ever pick Rafa to lose at Roland Garros, but I will be surprised if it is not a close match Sunday. If Thiem plays his normal game, he can take a set. If he plays to his highest potential, it will come down to a few decisive points in each set. I wouldn't bet against Rafa winning them, but Thiem will be in with a chance.

I think he improves on it significantly. I watched his semi today. He was extremely focused. Cecchinato peaked at the end of the first 2 sets, and he woulda/shoulda/coulda stolen one or both of those from most opponents. I think it was a veteran performance for Thiem, and to top it off, his celebration at the end was very muted. He was already looking to the final.

I think his chances to win are better than I thought possible in a RG final against Nadal (in the 25-35% range), and I think the chances he embarrasses himself are low.
