    Re: 2018 World Cup 6/14 - 7/15

One parallel to what the Moz just said: Years ago, there used to be a 3rd place game at the NCAA basketball final 4. They got rid of it for all sorts of reasons. But among them was the fact that no one was the least bit interested (sports fans, the teams, etc.). And therefore, there were 3rd place games where it was hard to get the players to even move on the court. I'm surprised they continue this traditional but worthless exercise at the World Cup.

I think there is money involved. $24 MM go to the team in 3rd place, $22 MM go to fourth.

World Cup 2018: Fifa investigates England chants during Croatia defeat
    By Richard Conway

    BBC sports news correspondent

Chants of a "possible discriminatory" nature by England fans during their World Cup semi-final defeat by Croatia, are being investigated by Fifa.

It relates to the chanting of "no surrender" by England fans and other potentially discriminatory songs.

"We can confirm that a report has been filed in relation to chants of a possible discriminatory nature by English fans," said Fifa.

"Proceedings have been opened against The Football Association."

England were beaten 2-1 in Moscow after extra-time as they attempted to reach a first World Cup final since 1966.

They will end their tournament with a third/fourth place play-off against Belgium in St Petersburg on Saturday.

On Wednesday the FA was fined 70,000 Swiss francs (50,000) after Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Raheem Sterling wore "unauthorised" socks after ignoring a Fifa warning to stop.

The players wore branded ankle support socks over official Nike socks, "breaching media and marketing regulations and the Fifa equipment regulations".

    Doping tests negative

Fifa announced on Thursday that so far all doping tests conducted before and during the World Cup have yielded negative results.

Since January 2018, a total of 2,037 tests have been conducted, Fifa said. On average, every player from the four remaining teams has been tested four times since January, with some of tested up to eight times.

    Vive la France!

Very exciting World Cup with unexpected turns at every stage. See everyone at Euro 2020, the different setup should prove interesting.

Ernie Brandts did so in 1978.

A bit sad that Croatia couldn't come up with one more inspired game, but France was clearly the stronger team today.

They did dominate statistically for the most part (way ahead in possession for example) except in getting their shots actually on net. France definitely out executed them.
    Thanks for the medal Johanna!
