A bunch of late finishes so far...high drama.

Early drama this am, Colombia gets a red card for a deliberate hand ball and Japan scores on the ensuing penalty just 5 minutes in.
    Thanks for the medal Johanna!

Japan defeated Colombia. Colombia got a red card so played with ten men.

Red card did not hurt Colombia nearly as much as you'd think it would given it was the entire game. Japan didn't do a ton to push their advantage. Colombia seemed the better team for most of the match as they adjusted well and quickly to the 10 men, but they gave up that second goal and couldn't tie it again.

That was a rather stupid self inflicted defeat for Colombia...

Senegal scores! I don't know enough about soccer to understand why the Polish goalie came out so far

Another horrible mistake, this time by Egypt. Salah has been a near non factor so far...

As did that bribe that got them this ridiculous Group A assignment.

Russia will win the cup. Vlad will make sure. It will get him almost unanimous support in Russia because, who cares about your human rights when your country won the world cup?

I thought this from the minute it was announced that Russia would host the Cup this year.

What JazzNU said in post number 56!!

I do not however agree that Russia will win the cup. My theory, that I may have already mentioned, is that their ranking was low enough that the country and Putin would be acceptably pleased if they survived group play. That is why I am so certain that the make-up of Group A, and even the order of Russia's matches, was no accident at all. It was clearly fixed.

So, Ponchi and Ti, I do have an ounce of fear that you could both be right and that Russia will win. For that to happen, probably a fair number of referees will have to be on the take, and maybe even a few players from other teams. It is not impossible for them to pull off that degree of cheating, but I feel it more likely that they will settle for surviving group play.

    We'll see.

It would be very hard for them not to make it out of their group now. I don't follow much outside of the World Cup, so I'm not sure how good Egypt really is, but I thought Egypt was going to win with their star returning today. Now if Russia can do something against Uruguay we really can't say it was only the draw that got them through.
    Thanks for the medal Johanna!
