THE UNITED STATES DEFEATS THE NETHERLANDS, 3-1

The United States Fed Cup Team advanced to the 2018 Fed Cup Semifinal by defeating the Netherlands, 3-1, in the World Group First Round in Asheville, N.C., today.

American No. 1 Venus Williams clinched the victory for the U.S. by winning her 11th consecutive Fed Cup singles match today, defeating Dutch No. 1 Richel Hogenkamp, 7-5, 6-1, in one hour and six minutes. Williams and Hogenkamp had never played previously. Williams now holds a 21-2 singles record in Fed Cup competition.

In the dead doubles rubber, Venus Williams was substituted for Lauren Davis, who was originally named to the doubles rubber, meaning sisters Serena and Venus Williams were named to play together against the Netherlands’ Lesley Kerkhove and Demi Schuurs. Both Serena and Venus Williams have been ranked No. 1 in the world in doubles and had won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together. However, in the end of today’s doubles match, Schuurs, ranked No. 32 in doubles, and Kerkhove, ranked No. 65 in doubles, defeated Serena and Venus Williams, 6-2, 6-3. Serena was competing in her first pro event since the 2017 Australian Open and since giving birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia in September. She won her 23rd Grand Slam title at her last Australian Open while pregnant and now holds the record for the most Grand Slam singles titles in the Open Era.

The fourth singles rubber scheduled between No. 2s CoCo Vandeweghe and Arantxa Rus did not take place.

The United States Fed Cup Team will next travel to France, April 21-22, for the World Group Semifinal. France defeated Belgium in a fifth-and-decisive doubles rubber earlier today.

Attendance for Sunday’s Fed Cup matches at the U.S. Cellular Center was another sell-out crowd of 5,208. Asheville was hosting Fed Cup for the first time.
