David Ferrer will coach Alexander Zverev on a trial basis.

I love the idea. It'll probably be an unmitigated disaster because I am highly skeptical that Zverev's mentality can be salvaged, but an attitude like David is precisely what Zverev needs.

(And I love the idea of David locking Alexander in the closet as punishment.)

Didn't Zverev make the Aussie Open semis and give Thiem a four-set battle?

It's a little too early to give up on him.

I don't think we are giving up on him. When Roger, Rafa and Nole retire, he will be in the mix because the level of talent will drop (or the one talented player is Kyrgios).
But he already had issues with another hard working Spaniard (Ferrero). Ferrero left precisely because of Zverev's work ethics. So to believe that by dropping one letter from the end of the last name this will be different is a little bit of a stretch (and funny)

    Re: Tennis Coaching Merry-Go-Round

Zverev is a strange case. His forehand is below average for a top 30 player and his recent service yips are stunning for a top 100 player. Yet, he already has more Masters Series tournament titles (four) than Wawrinka, del Potro and Cilic combined (three).

I'm not sure work ethic is his problem despite Ferrero's criticism. He has gotten more out of his game than appears to be there at Master's series events and less out of his game than appears to be there at slams.

On the court, Ferrer and Ferrero had very different games. Ferrero was ultra-talented but inconsistent. Ferrer was less talented (although his forehand was underrated) and ultra-consistent once he got past the slam yips he had earlier in his career. I'm not sure how that will translate into coaching and I'm not sure what the heck has been going on with Zverev, but he has to fix the serve and stop rolling over the forehand in pressure situations and hitting it short.

    Re: Tennis Coaching Merry-Go-Round

For purely selfish reasons, because I was huge fan of David Ferrer, I hope this works out for him. We've had 5 million discussions about whether or not David should end up in the Tennis Hall of Fame, and once or twice I mused that his only viable paths to the HOF were tennis commentary, launching a highly successful tennis academy for kids/young players, or coaching talented players to a new level. So at least one of those paths is now in the works.

I agree Dry. If he can stop Sascha from stopping and wondering why his opponent hasn't retired when faced with his magnificence he will deserve HoF.

I wait with bated breath for pictures of coach and pupil smoking together.

In Spain and Argentina, they don't call it "Clay". It is POLVO DE LADRILLO (which is actually accurate. Red clay is made by grinding bricks).
