Yeah the French meltdown was that of a child. Maybe it would go in a Juvenile category. The DVD assault was perpetrated by her mom's boyfriend, though. I had to look this up because I had never heard it. Martina was a party in the assault but evidently did not personally wield the device.

MY BAD! I thought I remembered that it was just her and her mom. So sorry, Martina!

For all we know, she handed him the DVD player.

    Dumb actions by tennis players?
Becker. Pregnant wife. Russian woman. Broom closet.
    * Yes, it's me (last seen on TW boards in 2009).

Oh, c'mon, if you are going to go with Becker, pretty much everything he has done after retirement.
Remember his defense about not paying taxes because he had a "U.N. Passport" as a "Goodwill Ambassador"? Yep, that went well...

Reader asks: on the day the Washington @nfl team finally renounces its nickname, what can tennis leave behind? I came up w/ a) the indefensibility that is margaret court’s bigotry b) ballkids handling soiled towels c) the idea that fans can only support homegrown players
Ball kids as personal servants would be a good start.

Ti, Agreed!! While you all know that I am opposed to Margaret Court having any recognition from the tennis community until she expresses some remorse for the harm her anti-LGBTQ stances have caused, I still think the thing that tennis absolutely needs to get rid of immediately and permanently is the thing with the ball-kids. They should never touch one of those nasty towels (not now, nor in the times when the virus is of no concern). I would even go one weird step further. If there are 6 balls in play that have been deemed acceptable by the referee (or whatever number there is), when you are thrown a ball by the ball-kid, it is the one you will use next. None of this throwing of several balls back and forth so that you can look at all of them. That has become an absurdity, especially with most of the top male pros. If a player thinks a certain ball is no longer acceptable, which certainly happens, that ball should be shown to the referee.

Call me extreme, but I'd be perfectly happy with a rule where if any man (and it's always a man) yells at a ballkid, he is immediately kicked out of professional tennis forever.

I see it differently. A pro tennis match is a field of battle. No place for a kid, in my opinion. Why are we asking people to interact with kids in the most stressful time of their jobs? Why are we asking kids to perform a job in those conditions (tensions are high, millions are watching)? I wouldn't want a kid around my workplace when I'm in the heat of something. I hope I'd always keep my cool but I'm sure I'd slip up now and then, as I do with kids in other parts of my life. Just keep kids out of the line of fire.

Why? Because the kids work for free. Middle aged farts and oldies also volunteer at tournaments but they can’t run and retrieve balls as quickly as kids.

I’m sure the last thing tournaments want is to make ball kids a paid position.
    Towel Avatar, do your thing!

I so would rather the tournaments stop this ridiculous thing of the kids "escorting" the players to the court. It makes me cringe.

Why? It seems to be a cool experience for the kids and they get to hang out with cool athletes for a moment.

In general, I'm fully on board with stopping the sweaty towel habit, but otherwise I think the ballkid programs are great. I've seen kids really enjoy the experience, it's a great chance for them to be close to pro athletes and and seeing some high-level tennis close up. It's also a free camp/childcare for parents.

Not about payment. Volunteering doesn't bother me at all, at any level of life. About appropriateness for kids to be working at all in that setting. We all just take it for granted, but I've always thought it's a little inappropriate to have very young helpers in that environment.
