    Scalia Confirmed Dead at 79

    Breaking News

Senior Associate Justice Antonin Scalia found dead at West Texas ranch
By Gary Martin Published 3:40 pm, Saturday, February 13, 2016

Associate Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead of apparent natural causes Saturday on a luxury resort in West Texas, federal officials said.

Scalia, 79, was a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, a resort in the Big Bend region south of Marfa.

According to a report, Scalia arrived at the ranch on Friday and attended a private party with about 40 people. When he did not appear for breakfast, a person associated with the ranch went to his room and found a body.

The U.S. Marshal Service, the Presidio County sheriff and the FBI were involved in the investigation.
Officials with the law enforcement agencies declined to comment.

A federal official who asked not to be named said there was no evidence of foul play and it appeared that Scalia died of natural causes.

Scalia was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1986.

Staff writers Vianna Davila, Tyler White and Richard A. Marini, John MacCormack and Guillermo Contreras contributed to this report.

    EL PASO -

EL PASO -- An El Paso source close to Justice Antonin Scalia tells ABC-7 that the 79-year-old died in his sleep last night after a day of quail hunting at Cibolo Creek Ranch outside of Marfa, Texas.

The Justice did not report feeling ill and retired to his room after dinner. The source, who was traveling with Scalia, told ABC-7 an El Paso priest has been called to Marfa.

Scalia was the longest-serving current Justice on the Supreme Court. He was appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986.

With 8 justices, if the Supreme Court divides 4-4 the lower court opinion is affirmed without creating any Supreme Court precedent.

He might not have been a good man (depends from one's political ideology), but he was certainly a very important one.

It will be for the next president to appoint a replacement.

A reminder regarding who serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Memo to Obama: Recommend a nominee ASAP and force Ted Cruz to decide: Do I stay on the campaign trail to serve my own ambitions? Or do I do the job I was elected to do, including confirmation hearings?

There's a lot of "ding dong the witch is dead" sentiment on my Twitter TL.

As someone said after this Trump is a luxury this country can't afford.

Hopefully not. The average confirmation time to appoint a justice is 74 days.

Longest was Clarence Thomas at 107 days.

Obviously the Republicans will try to punt, but the election is still a very long ways away.

No way. Republicans in the Senate would have to be politically incompetent to confirm anything from a lame duck president. I'd be less surprised with Trump becoming a president.
