If Obama wants to be shrewd, and he should be, then he will nominate an African American. Turn this into an issue of race, much as Clarence Thomas so effectively did himself to get on the bench.

Why would Republicans care? They aren't winning more than 10% of African American vote anyway.

Whatever happens this will be a great motivation for many people to vote. Certainly on the right, but possibly on the left as well.

It would be an effective way to publicly shame the Republicans and twist their arms if the perception becomes that they are blocking a qualified, minority candidate.

After all, when Clarence Thomas used the term 'high-tech lynching' the Democrats pretty much backed off.

Not the same thing. Democrats rely on minority vote and thus can't antagonise them. Republicans have no such reason to back off.

It will be a political show now. If I was a Republican leader I'd immediately demand replacing a conservative justice with another conservative one. Of course Obama will not do it, but that way at least you start the "game" on attack.

Looks like Republicans aren't going to try any complicated games. Just a straight no on any confirmation.

Unfortunately I agree with this. Congress has become very adept at postponing confirmations and other important issues.

McConnell has already said an appointment should not be made until after the election. He said the American people should have a voice in Scalia's replacement. Because, you know, we've always done it that way. Senator McConnell can jam it up his...

In any case, this is going to make the already contentious atmosphere in American politics even more so.

What about the President nominating himself? That's an idea that was floated on my Twitter time line.

I think Loretta Lynch would be perfect. She was just confirmed and has comported herself well.

Many Republicans in congress can't be shamed. Nominating an African American wouldn't slow them down one bit. During the past 7 years, with the country's first African American president, they've done everything short of spray painting a swastika on the front door of the White House.

They've proven they already have no shame.

Obama and democrats now have to think about their best strategy. They know actual confirmation is very unlikely, but how to turn all this it into a maximum political advantage?

Why would that shame them anyway? From a neutral point of view that doesn't make any sense. They have to fight for someone who shares their political ideology whatever the skin colour... It would be a political suicide not to.

Democrats could choose to try to gain the max political capital now by nominating strategic candidates or they could also decide to take it lightly and bank everything on Clinton/Sanders winning in November. If that happens change is Senate is also very likely and liberal confirmation will be only a minor struggle.

Diocese of El Paso's Spokeswoman Elizabeth O'Hara tells ABC-7 Catholic Priest Mike Alcuino, in Presidio, was called to the ranch, and administered Justice Scalia's last rites Saturday afternoon.

It's my understanding that the Sacrament(s) known as "The Last Rites" is given to the person while he/she is still alive

    T
he last rites are meant to prepare the dying person's soul for death, by providing absolution for sins by penance, sacramental grace and prayers for the relief of suffering through anointing, and the final administration of the Eucharist, known as "Viaticum", which is Latin for "provision for the journey."

Reception of the Eucharist in this form is the only sacrament essentially associated with dying. Accordingly, "the celebration of the Eucharist as Viaticum is the sacrament proper to the dying Christian".[1] In the Roman Ritual's Pastoral Care of the Sick: Rites of Anointing and Viaticum, Viaticum is the only sacrament dealt with in Part II: Pastoral Care of the Dying.

Within that part, the chapter on Viaticum is followed by two more chapters, one on Commendation of the Dying, with short texts, mainly from the Bible, a special form of the litany of the saints, and other prayers, and the other on Prayers for the Dead. A final chapter provides Rites for Exceptional Circumstances, namely, the Continuous Rite of Penance, Anointing, and Viaticum, Rite for Emergencies, and Christian Initiation for the Dying. The last of these concerns the administration of Baptism and Confirmation to those who have not received these sacraments.
