New web server in the works

We're movin' on up... but not to the East side.

This weekend TAT will be moving to a shiny brand new server. I will be paying a little more per month, but what we're getting in return (3x hard drive space, x2 processor, x2 RAM) is well worth it! For those who know about this kind of thing, I've listed the specs at the bottom of this post.

The new server is already set up and files, databases, scripts, etc. will be copied over. At some point after midnight (Eastern) tomorrow night, our IP address will be switched to the new server. I don't know the exact time this will happen, and there will likely be no warning. Just keep in mind if you can't get to TAT for a short time this weekend it's likely due to the move.

Because we're keeping our same IP address downtime should be no more than 1-2 hours, if that. Once the move is complete I'll post an announcement at the top of our forum pages so you know.

Also, we will lose some recent threads/posts - between the time the files are copied and the time we go online on the new server. So, if it's something important, don't post it until you see the announcement at the top of the page that the move is complete!

    ======================
    Your current server specifications are:

    Processor: Intel E4500 DUAL CORE
    Memory: 4GB DDR SDRAM
    Hd1: 250GB 7200RPM SATA / 8MB Cache
    Hd2: 120GB 7200RPM SATA / 8MB Cache

    RemoteBackup: No Remote Backup Needed
    OS: Linux - CentOS 5
    (+32 Bit)
ControlPanel: CPanel / Web Host Manager
    (+ServerSecure)
    (+Fantastico/XController)

The new server specifications will be:

Processor: Intel Xeon E3-1220 V2 3.1GHZ, Quad Core
    Memory: 8GB DDR SDRAM
    Hd1: 2 x 1TB 7200RPM SATA / 8MB Cache Software RAID 1 configuration
    Hd2: 1TB 7200RPM SATA / 8MB Cache

    RemoteBackup: No Remote Backup Needed
    OS: Linux - CentOS 6
    (+64 Bit)
ControlPanel: CPanel / Web Host Manager
    (+ServerSecure)
    (+Fantastico/XController)

Re: New web server in the works

I've scheduled the final move for Friday night after midnight (Eastern), so there shouldn't be any down time before then -- then, hopefully, only an hour or two at most.

It turns out that a 'final sync' will be performed before the actual move, so the warning above about important posts isn't quite as critical, as the 'final sync' should include posts up to the time of the move.

I'll update this thread as necessary.

You know you are a tennis fan when you looked at the title of this thread, read "We're getting a Bigger-Better-Faster SERVE" and you thought "Yeah, I can use that!!!"

    Congrats, Kirkus.

We're on the new server. But we're experiencing some performance issues. Pages are loading way too slow. I know this, and our server host knows this. We'll be working on those issue over the next hours and days.

PLEASE, if you notice any problems (other than slow pages) let me know in this thread.

Can a few others here verify that following the server move last night our forum pages -- at least before your browser cached them -- is painfully slow to load? When I clear my browser's cache and load a forum page it takes, on average, 20 seconds before anything happens. The page just sits there spinning.

I'm working with tech support and I want to make sure it's not just me.

Re: New web server in the works

The very first page I loaded after we went to server was slow...since then has been normal speed, and I've been on 4-5 times since.

Cleared cache and I'm still fine.

Can I ask another favor from some of you?

Will you go to the following pages and let me know if they load right up or hang up and load slow?
