What would the reaction be from the liberal side if the decision was 5-4 in the opposite direction? A quite acceptance?

Kind of an apples and oranges comparison here. There wasn't as much at stake for the social progressives. A ruling the other way would have been a temporary setback whereas the ruling in favor provides some finality to the movement, and a death knell for the bans. There is no foreseeable chance of a constitutional amendment which would be the only possible further obstacle.

So, no, there would not be quiet acceptance, but it would not have had the impact the ruling this way does either.

    Clarence Thomas:
"The corollary of that principle is that human dignity cannot be taken away by the government. Slaves did not lose their dignity (any more than they lost their humanity) because the government allowed them to be enslaved. Those held in internment camps did not lose their dignity because the government confined them. And those denied governmental benefits certainly do not lose their dignity because the government denies them those benefits. The government cannot bestow dignity, and it cannot take it away."
    ---o---

The whole f------ point of slavery was that you were not human. The whole point of a concentration camp is that you are not human. They could lock you, cremate you and dispose of your ashes in a nameless pond because they thought you were not human.
How come this man become a supreme court judge?

Of course not, but it would fall short of "get rid of the Supreme Court."

George Herbert Walker Bush decided he was the best replacement for Justice Thurgood Marshall.

You said this so much better than I would have.

    How infantile can you be?
It's what they do. They can't win at the polls unless they create legislation that hinders peoples' ability to vote. They'll never be successful at reversing Roe v Wade so they create legislation that forces health clinics that provide abortion services to have to close their doors. The Supreme Court doesn't rule the way they want so the Supreme Court must be abolished.

They're on the wrong side of history, and against the direction the nation is heading, on so many social issues that the only way they can get their way is to lie, cheat, and steal. They're disgusting. I say let's get rid of them.

To invoke the revolting history of slavery as an argument against protecting peoples' rights makes me sick.

    Re: Supreme Court Watch 2014-15

In many ways the Republicans have themselves to thank for today's verdict. They were the ones who made this a national issue during presidential elections and otherwise, over and over, when it was nobody cared. They were the ones who forced the issue by not accepting state laws and they were the ones who pushed their non-acceptance through the courts thinking the judicial system would back them up.

This day would have come eventually, but it has come faster than we could have hoped thanks in part to them.

I'm almost too happy with this outcome to light into Clarence Thomas over his statements in this dissent specifically, EXCEPT that I'm going to.......How a human being and especially a man of that ethnicity could say what he said about slavery??? He is an embarrassment to the species. (but for my more serious "lighting into him", see my notes of early this morning).

Meanwhile, some folks are so disgusted by the fact that same sex marriage is now allowed in the U.S. that they're moving to Canada--where same sex marriage has been legal for 9 years, 11 months, and 362 days.

Puerto Rico to Swiftly Enforce Marriage Equality After U.S. Supreme Court Ruling
By Angie Romero | June 26, 2015 6:37 PM EDT

Hours after the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in favor of same-sex marriage rights on Friday (June 26), Puerto Rico pushed for legislation reform that would extend those rights to the U.S. territory in a timely fashion.

Supporters across the island, including those gathered outside the Capitol building in San Juan, celebrated the historic ruling, which Justice Secretary Cesar Miranda called a huge step in the quest for equal rights.

According to The Associated Press, Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla signed an executive order requiring government agencies in Puerto Rico to become compliant with the ruling within 15 days. Subsequently, the island's Health Department is expected to start issuing marriage licenses within 30 days.

LOL, idiocy at its best. Wait until they realize they have "socialist" healthcare coverage. They'll move to the Arctic where they'll learn about climate change.

    Reality has them surrounded.
