These are the overly-extensive yet pretty unhelpful things I learned during my time at qualifying yesterday.

1) There are more people who come to these things and spend an amazing amount of money just to blindly root for Americans, despite not knowing who either player was anyway, than I ever thought possible.
2) The best hitting of the day was, by far, Anna Tatishvili vs. Nicole Gibbs, followed by Kateryna Bondarenko vs. Chang Kai-Chen. The issue is that none of these 4 girls really had a serve for their groundies to back up so it made for some painful watching anyway.
3) People will cry, jump over each other, and pee themselves for a famous person practicing. Both Federer and Murray had practice sessions on outside courts and they got more of a crowd than any match all day.
4) The most one-sided crowd was for WC Komal Safdar against Johanna Larsson, who had a total of 2 people cheering for her the whole match. Komal is a local girl, from Mason, who now plays for Syracuse. My USTA team and I got to played against her many times in juniors so that was pretty cool and a bunch of my friends were down there to watch her. However, Komal was totally and completely out of her element and the fact that Larsson lost 2 games is probably due to the fact that Komal would've gotten more cheers for a whiff than Johanna would've for the shot of her life.
5) I watched Arvidsson practice with Peer and neither of them looked like top 100 players at all. Arvidsson literally doesn't know what footwork is whatsoever and Peer apparently doesn't know what tennis is anymore. Her fight is still there, even in practice, but her point construction and technique has disintegrated since she was a match away from the top 10. Sad indeed.
6) Robson has grown up quite a bit since I saw her last 2 years ago, both in height and behavior on court. She was quite calm and collected against Dushevina, even when things were getting tight. She's long removed from those slut comments it seems.
7) It was weird watching Hlavackova and Hradecka playing in qualies knowing that they were Olympic silver medalists. It worked out for Andrea although her technique leaves me wondering how she gets any shots in at all. It didn't work so well for Lucie against Casey "of the water" where her ballbashing meant that she actually didn't get any shots in at all.
8) Christian Harrison impressed me quite a bit. He didn't seem to be as much of a hot-head as Ryan, who was in the stands as well being quite supportive for little bro.
