Good win for Caro. I wasn't particularly confident about it before the match

Interesting, if she makes the team in 4 years that will be truly impressive with the steps that some of the younger Americans have been making this year - particulalry Sloane Stephens who would have made the team if the entry had been after Wimbledon.

. Big choke from Sabine in the second set. The 2 service games she played after she got the break were horrible.
In the third, Maria was just better. Congrats to her!

In some way it was" justice serve". Sharapova gave her that game at 3-3.
Then in the third set she(SL) played a bad game at 1-0 to give the break back

First horrible service game- yes. Second- no. That was just a really, really bad way to lose the set.
But it was fun to watch. Commentator on my live stream (BBC?) called the first set, "one of the fiercest sets of tennis you ever wish to witness".

Yeah I was just talking about the first one at 4-3 when she had 3 doubles faults like sharapova did in the preceding game. Poor Sabine, she has to learn how to close

VERY sadly- this knowledge hasn't yet stopped me agonizing over her matches while they are taking place- at least unless I can do a Petra/Maybe Kerber New Era Conversion (as I back in the day gave up on Monica to transfer my caring for V.) BUT- the stings of losses don't last nearly as long as used to be the case. And, I wasn't expecting V to do nearly as well as she did. It's just been wonderful being a fan of her game.

Re: Olympic Tennis Day 5 OoP & Discussion
LOL @ this comment from Alex Ovechkin, Makiri's NHL boyfriend:
"It used to be, I play hockey and my family watch me and they explain to me how they’re nervous," Ovechkin told the Washington Post. "I say, 'Why are you nervous? It's simple.' Right now, I [am] just watching her play, and I get nervous, because you think, 'Jesus Christ. Come on. Do something better.' "
I have often thought the same thing when watching Makiri play.
