Doesn't Rafa usually play Queen's instead of Halle? I guess he wanted a shot at Roger before Wimbledon?

Rafa had a five year deal to play Queens. My guess is that contract has expired and he's free to play Halle.

A 5-year deal with... the organizers? His sponsors? The tour? I don't know how this stuff works.

    Re: ATP 250 Halle, Queens 6/11-6/17 2012

Halle has some kind of exclusive deal with Fed: if he plays a Wimby warm-up, it'll be that one, and that one only.

Also, I've heard some of the big earners (particularly with endorsements) are leery of a British tax law that taxes foreign nationals on ALL their earnings (not just prize money earned in the UK) based on the # of days where that person competed in the UK. Rafa has said he could lose money by playing a Queen's Club.

It has to do with taxes. The UK charges athletes/entertainers not only a tax on the prize money but also on endorsements and other incomes based on the time the athlete spends in the UK playing.

Rafa has said he could actually lose money by playing in the UK when you combine Queens, Wimby and the YEC.

Edited to add: Scotty already said it.

It was with the organizers. Scotty's tax angle could also be a factor.

yep, this was actually covered a couple of months ago in the press here, especially with the Olympics here this year too. despite his wimbledon record, he has only reached the final of queens once, winning in 2008. it will be interesting to see him in halle with federer this year though
