Maybe it's time to start referring to Gabriella Sabatini as "Gabe".

It's time for the Argentines to call on Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Maybe Dulko and her soccer player husband can hurry up with that baby already. It can serve as team captain AND ballboy.

Radek Stepanek had spinal surgery yesterday. No timetable for his return, but they hope to have him begin rehab next week. And LEander Paes is said to be shopping for a new partner for the French, so it is likely that he'll be sidelined for some time.

Hot on the heels of his Australian Open Boys' final, Thanasi Kokkanakis suffered a stress fracture in his back that could sideline him for six months.

Wow. Sad to hear about Radek the veteran player and young Kokkanakis who was just getting in on the conversation.

May they both get better soon.

    Re: Injury and Illness

Brian Baker is doing a regular column for USA Today discussing his rehab - here's today's entry -

Brian Baker: Surprising how fast conditioning vanishes
Special for USA TODAY Sports 8:39a.m. EST February 14, 2013

(Brian Baker knows injuries: Six years off the tour for five major surgeries. Sidelined again with a torn lateral meniscus, the 27-year-old American will chronicle his recovery for USA TODAY Sports.)

In 2012, I would put the city of Nashville against any other city when the criteria is individuals who had unbelievable sporting achievements.

I recently was nominated for Nashville Sportsperson of the Year for last year. In most years, I would think that I would have a decent chance to win because I had a great year and a story to accompany the achievement.

I wonder, however, if I will finish last of the five nominees (pretty sure they won't broadcast who finishes last!). The other four nominees are Brandt Snedeker, 2012 FedExCup winner in golf and currently the No. 4-ranked player in the world; R.A. Dickey, the NL CY Young winner; David Price, the AL CY Young winner; and Vanderbilt football coach James Franklin, who led the Commodores to nine wins. A decent lineup for a city that doesn't get much sports recognition! I'm honestly just happy that I made the list.

Rehab is taking a big chunk of time out of my days. I have been leaving my house around 8:30 every morning (weekdays) and not getting home until about noon. Since I am used to being very active, I've actually enjoyed getting out of the house for several hours each morning. I'm still limited with what I can do with my knee, but I have been amping up my upper-body and core workouts. It's amazing how quickly your conditioning vanishes when you stop working out. I thought I did a fairly moderate upper body workout on Monday which consisted of bench press, pull-ups, dips, biceps curls, push-ups, and various shoulder exercises. To my surprise, I'm still quite sore! I figured that I wouldn't have lost that much muscle endurance from taking four weeks off. I guess it proves that it takes a lot longer to get in shape than to lose it.

The toughest part of my rehab each day occurs at the beginning and end of each session. During these times, my therapist works on my knee extension. After surgery, the knee joint tends to get tight due to the excess fluid, and this makes getting full extension a struggle. Although it's extremely painful, I can already see the improvement, and my knee feels better.

It has been nice being able to spend some quality time in Nashville with friends and family. Tennis players travel so much, so we really enjoy being home. In the last few weeks I've been able to hang out with friends, visit with family, go on dates with my girlfriend, and watch a ton of college basketball. In most circumstances, this sounds like a great few weeks!

Unfortunately, I've already missed hitting the fuzzy yellow ball. I don't think being out really hit me hard until checking the results of the ATP tournament currently going on in San Jose, Calif. This would have been my next tournament after Australia, so this is my first tournament that I've had to withdraw from. I'm sure I will miss the game a ton in the coming months, but hopefully I can come back stronger and fitter.

Nadal should not blame his injury this time. He was 100% Fit & Just won the French Open. He lost in Wimbledon for his Bad playing for sure.
