Loretta Lynn taps Zooey Deschanel for 'Coal Miner's' musical
May 11, 2012
Country music legend Loretta Lynn has chosen her next leading lady.
Lynn, 80, revealed plans to adapt "Coal Miner's Daughter" into a musical version of her life story and said she wants actress/singer Zooey Deschanel to play the part.
Lynn made the announcement mid-concert at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on Thursday night by inviting Deschanel on stage for a duet of the title song.
"Well, there's a little girl back stage that's going to do the play of 'Coal Miner's Daughter' on Broadway," Lynn said. "Zooey, where you at, honey?"
The singer used a similar platform in 1979 when she announced that Sissy Spacek was cast in the film of the same name, the tale of Lynn's rise from impoverished upbringing in rural Kentucky to Grand Ole Opry stardom. Spacek later won an Oscar for her role.
"It’s a long way from Butcher Holler to Broadway in New York City," said Lynn. "I never imagined I’d see 'Coal Miner’s Daughter' on a movie screen, and now I can’t believe it’s going to be on a stage for people to see... I’m going to be right there in the front row. And I know Zooey is going to be great—she sings and writes her own songs just like I do, and we even have the same color eyes!"
Plans for the Broadway show are in the early stages with the creative team and dates not yet announced. Scott Sanders Productions, with credits including the Broadway revival of"Evita,"and Fox Theatricals will produce the musical.
The show would mark Deschanel's Broadway debut. The Emmy- and Grammy-nominated "New Girl" star has released three albums as half of the pop duo She & Him, as well as a series of tuneful viral videos on her female-focused website, HelloGiggles.com.
"This is a great honor for me. This is my hero," Deschanel said at Thursday’s show.

Lynn was an original hipster. She was singing about birth control, divorce, cheating on her spouse in an era when those kind of topics never made it on the radio. In fact, a lot of her music was banned from radio stations in the early 70s because of its progressive nature.
She was a major pioneer for womens rights, and she did it in a gingham dress with 6 children at home.
I've wondered, given that Sissy Spacek was so good in CMD, that a lot of people think that the kind of person Sissy is is the kind of person Loretta is. And I don't know if that's all that true. I think Sissy is a bit more saint-like than Loretta ever was.

CMD is one of my favorite movies. I'm sure they toned Loretta down due to when the movie was made. It'll be interesting if they bring out the parts of her life/personality you mention.

CMD is brilliant stuff. One of those Oscar wins that is not all that debatable (though Mary Tyler Moore was quite good that year in "Ordinary People").
Are you a Sissy fan? As good as she is in CMD, "Badlands" is the performance of a lifetime.

Never seen "Badlands". Hope it's on Netflix.

"Badlands" is not on Netflix for me and not on Amazon.
Something about a licensing agreement...

I absolutely love Sherlock. I've been a Holmes fan for years and have read the complete series of stories many times. I like how Moffat/Gatiss pick parts from different stories and sprinkle them into an episode.
I'm seriously hanging out for series 3 - I'm not sure I can wait another year. Luckily I have the DVD's which I have already watched multiple times.
Benedict is my newest lust . He has the most fabulous voice, I could listen to him read the phone book!
Rusty and Maggie love Andy's medals!

Best Actress in a Comedy Series: (Tie) Zooey Deschanel - New Girl (FOX) and Amy Poehler - Parks and Recreation (NBC)
New Girl just kills me. I love it. And I love (LOVE) Zooey Deschanel!! (But the girl couldn't act her way out of a wet paper bag with a straight razor.)
I didn't think Loeretta Lynn could sing so why not get a girl who can't act to play her?
