I have about zero expectations for it, but I'm still going to tune in to the "Dallas" revival tonight. There was a stretch where it was among the very best things on TV. So I'm curious what happens with this.

Daily Beast has a great story with Linda Gray, Larry Hagman and Patrick Duffy. Seems most of the press leading up to the debut tonight has focused on them, rather than the newer stars (though the NY TiImes had a nice profile on the two female leads this past weekend):

Craig told me today that AMC has all but said next week's episode of The Killing will be its last, but I don't have a link to document it. What started out as a great show was totally ruined entirely in by the production team.

NBC is rebooting The Munsters for some unknowable reason and Roger Ebert tweeted this line from TV Guide that made me laugh out loud: "The Munsters" re-do on NBC "will maintain the core elements of the original series, although it will now be an hour-long drama." (TV Guide)

NEW YORK (AP) - Nine Nobel Peace Prize winners are speaking out against a new NBC competition series they say treats military maneuvers like athletic events.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the other Nobel laureates protested in an open letter that the show, "Stars and Stripes," glorifies war and armed violence.

The series, premiering on NBC on Monday night, pairs celebrities with U.S. military personnel for simulated military challenges. Celebrity participants include boxing champion Laila Ali, Superman actor Dean Cain, Olympic gold medalist Picabo Street and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's husband, Todd Palin.

The program is hosted by retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark.

"I'm doing this series for one reason," says Clark at the top of the show - "to introduce you, the American people, to the individuals that sacrifice so much for all of us."

The series is billed on its website as a "fast-paced competition" whose contestants "will gather at a remote training facility where they will be challenged to execute complicated missions inspired by real military exercises."

"Stars Earn Stripes" says it "pays homage to the men and women who serve in the U.S. armed forces and our first-responder services."

The letter, sent Monday to Clark, NBC boss Robert Greenblatt, producer Mark Burnett and others connected with the show, argues "this program pays homage to no one anywhere" and criticizes it for "trying to somehow sanitize war by likening it to an athletic competition."

The letter calls for NBC to stop airing the series.

NBC, responding to the charges, said that "Stars Earn Stripes" is "about thanking the young Americans who are in harm's way every day."

"This show is not a glorification of war, but a glorification of service," NBC said in a statement.

Besides Tutu, signers of the letter are Jody Williams, Mairead Maguire, Shirin Ebadi, Jose Ramos-Horta, Adolfo Perez Esquivel, Oscar Arias Sanchez, Rigoberta Menchu Tum and Betty Williams.

The Nobel laureates also declared their support for a protest against the show outside NBC's Rockefeller Center headquarters in Manhattan.

I had seen the previews but had no idea Wesley Clark was hosting it. That's disturbing.

I get the Nobel laureates point, but I really don't think THIS is what their power should go to protesting.

Cool, this right in line with the latest spate of mass(ish) killings in the US. Everyone needs more guns and this show will portray how much fun it is to be shot at and to shoot at and blow crap up, how can anyone complain about that? Maybe an arson, kidnapping, or assault show will be next? How from "The Running Man" are we?

Encore will feature the award-winning saga, THE THORN BIRDS, on Monday, December 10th – Thursday, December 13th at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The four-part miniseries will air as part of "The Big Miniseries Showcase," a weekly programming destination featuring fan favorite and classic titles on Encore.

Winner of six Emmy Awards and four Golden Globe Awards, including the highly coveted Golden Globe for Best Miniseries, THE THORN BIRDS stars Richard Chamberlain (BROTHERS & SISTERS, The Perfect Family, Shogun).

Chamberlain – who won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor for his portrayal of the ambitious, alluring and conflicted Father Ralph de Bricassart – is joined by an award-winning cast including Academy Award® nominee Rachel Ward (RAIN SHADOW, On the Beach, Against All Odds) as Meggie Cleary, the beautiful, yet often neglected young woman who falls in love with Father de Bricassart; the wealthy and envious matriarch Mary Carson played by Barbara Stanwyck, who won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress, for her role in the miniseries; Academy Award winner Christopher Plummer (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Up) as the ascetic, wise and understating Archbishop Contini-Verchese.

In THE THORN BIRDS, a wealthy Australian sheep station owner named Mary Carson, declares her deep yet unrequited love for a young parish priest, Father Ralph de Bricassart. Angry and frustrated, Mary dies shortly thereafter, knowing she can continue to control Father de Bricassart’s destiny, even from the grave. She places him far beyond the reach of anyone, especially her young niece Meggie Cleary, who falls in love with the priest. Father de Bricassart reciprocates his love and physical yearning for Meggie, however he is engaged in a constant struggle between his spiritual calling and his carnal desires. Spanning several generations, the saga chronicles the bittersweet lives, loves, secrets, tragedies and triumphs of a New Zealand farming family (originally released in 1983).

Love Downton Abbey. Cannot wait til January for Season 3 to finally reach these shores (and I can stop avoiding all the spoilers that are out there all over the net). And love Fellowes work...aside from "Downton", he's responsible for Robert Altman's final movie, the wonderful "Gosford Park". And this era of NYC would seem rife for engaging television. So this news excites me. But also scares me, because I can't imagine a Downton like costume drama working on commercial network TV. Cable, perhaps. But NBC, not so much...

Julian Fellowes Planning U.S. Spin on Downton Abbey for NBC
    by Josef Adalian

Boom! NBC announced today that the network has hired Downton Abbey overlord Julian Fellowes to create a Downton-esque drama about the moguls and mavens of late-nineteenth-century New York City. Dubbed The Gilded Age, the show will be, per NBC, "an epic tale of the princes of the American Renaissance, and the vast fortunes they made — and spent." In a press release, Fellowes said the show will be set in "a vivid time" in American history, a period "with dizzying, brilliant ascents and calamitous falls, of record-breaking ostentation and savage rivalry; a time when money was king." No word on when the project will hit the air; technically, it doesn't appear as if NBC has ordered it to series just yet. But fear not, Downton fans: Fellowes will continue with that show, which was just renewed for a fourth season, as he begins work on his new production deal with Universal Television.
