Janko Tipsarevic accuses opponent of making obscene gesture after Davis Cup match
    By Chris Chase

After surviving a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 9-7 marathon in the Davis Cup, world No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic said he was on the receiving end of an obscene gesture from Czech opponent Radek Stepanek.

The two met at the net and exchanged a curt handshake following the five hour, 10 minute match. As they separated, Stepanek appeared to say something to Tipsarevic. The Serbian took offense to teh comment and tried to confront his opponent. He was eventually held back by Serbian captain Bogdan Obradovic.

Tipsarevic later posted a picture (above right) that he says proves Stepanek gestured with his middle finger. Stepanek's hand is on the right, untaped. Tipsarevic tweeted the photo with the caption: "It really is a shame that a great tennis nation like CZE is represented by someone like him."

The photo is unclear about the bird-giving, as is the video below. It's obvious Stepanek said something Tipsarevic didn't like, but the middle finger usage goes unseen. Whether or not it happened, Stepanek's behavior was unsportsmanlike and boorish.

Tipsarevic was furious about Stepanek's actions and said so in his press conference.

"I would just like all of you to know what kind of person is Radek Stepanek. I have this thing that I always believe the best in people, and even though players are telling that he can be not so nice on the court, I never believed it — even though I played him three times. As you can see my behavior on the court was, I think, fair enough. When he fell, I crossed the net to see if he needs help. I was always letting him to pass the net first. I even two times admitted a ball (was in) that was questionable After five hours and 10 minutes instead of shaking my hand, he gave me he the middle finger and told me I am stinking — something bad, it's a swear word, let's just say, 'vagina.'

"[I] can understand that somebody like him can be angry after losing a match, especially after having so many chances. But doing this? Not that I would never invent something like this. Unbelievable. I never, ever, ever, thought that I would experience this, especially because of my behavior on court.

"I'm not saying I'm a golden boy, the Stefan Edberg of men's tennis, but at least I know what is right and what is not right. There is just one word for this: it is pathetic. Nothing else."

Stepanek was terse with his response. "We normally shook hands,"he told the AP. "[Tipsarevic] was likely happy that he won

    2012 Zonals - April 16 week

    Asia/Oceania Zone Group IV:

    NEWS ARTICLE

The Qatar Tennis Federation will host the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group IV tie at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex beginning today.

Qatar is acting as host to 10 nations competing in two pools. The top nation in each pool will play against the runner-up in the other pool with the two winning nations promoted to Asia/Oceania Zone Group III for 2013. Ties are contested in a best-of-three rubbers format and are played on one day. There are two singles rubbers followed by a doubles rubber.

Pool A consists of United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Turkmenistan. The opening match will see Iraq, who missed out in the promotion play-off in 2011, face Saudi Arabia who are returning to the competition for the first time since 2009.

In Pool B, hosts Qatar are taking on Myanmar in the first match of the round-robin phase. Myanmar are competing in Group IV having been relegated in 2011 and will be looking to make an immediate return. The other nations in Pool B are Jordan, Singapore and Cambodia, who are making their Davis Cup debut.

Play begins at 3.30pm each day,

Monday April 16 - DOHA, QATAR:
The first day of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Group IV Round Robin has been completed at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha, Qatar.

Pool A has seen a very one-sided day with comprehensive victories from Saudi Arabia and Turkmenistan over Iraq and Bahrain respectively.

Although Turkmenistan did not drop a single set in its tie against Bahrein, all the matches were closely contested. Turkmenistan’s Eziz Davletov GOT off to a good start against Yusuf Qaed 63 62 and Aleksandr Ernepesov claimed an unreachable lead for the Central Asians with a 64 62 win against Bahrain’s Hasan Abdul-Nabi. The doubles meant the third point for Turkmenistan with Eziz Davletov an Jamshid Ilmuradov claiming a 62 62 victory.

Saudi Arabia earned a very clear win against Iraq. The Saudi team only dropped 7 games in their matches thank to three victories from Fahad Al Asaad against Ali Khairi Hashim Al Mayahi 60 61, Omar Al Thagib 64 60 over Ahmed Hamzah Abdulhasan and the doubles pair Zaki Al Abdullah/ Omar Al Thagib over Ahmed Hamzah Abdulhasan/Ali Khairi Hashim Al Mayahi 60 62.

In Pool B the ties have been more tightly contested with the hosts Qatar earning a very tough win against Myanmar in a deciding doubles match that had two tie-breaks 76(3) 76(4).

The opening matches were easier for Cambodia that did not drop a set in their victory over Singapore. However, Singapore showed that they are a motivated rival and forced a tie-break in the last point, when all was already decided. The doubles match ended with a score of 67(8) 36 for the Cambodian pair Kenny Bum/Pannhara Mam.

    Tuesday April 17, DOHA, QATAR:

The second day of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group IV has been completed at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha, Qatar.

Jordan made their debut in their Round Robin Pool B match against Myanmar, who had been beaten by hosts Qatar the previous day. The tie between the two nations ended up being the most fiercely contested so far in the competition.

The first point was taken by Myanmar thanks to Nge Hnaung's effort against Yazan Abdelaziz Abudayeh. The first set went into a long tie break that was eventually won by Hnaung while Abudayeh recovered and took the second. The last set followed the same even pattern but Myanmar managed to take the lead with a hard-fought win 67(8) 63 46.

The second match between Jordan's Fawaz El Hourani and Phyo Min Thar also saw a very tightly contested first set in which El Hourani prevailed. The second set was an easier affair and Jordan neutralized Myanmar's early lead with a 76(4) 61 score.

Everything was left to be decided in the doubles rubber in which Yazan Abdelaziz Abudayeh and Fawaz El Hourani stepped again onto court to face the same rivals that they had faced in the singles, Thar and Hnaung. The match went into a tightly contested third set that was eventually won by the Jordanian pair with a remarkable 64 57 86 scoreline that gave them the victory in the tie 2-1.

In the other tie in Pool B, Cambodia, playing their second ever Davis Cup tie, managed to take the two first points of the single rubbers against hosts Qatar with very comprehensive victories from Pannhara Mam and Kenny Bun against Jabor Ali-Mutawa and Mousa Zayed 62 63 and 60 60 respectively. The doubles match was won by the pair Ali-Mutawa/Zayed in three sets against Pannhara Mam and Vetu Mam 26 62 75 leaving a 2-1 overall score.

Cambodia leads the table after two days in what is being a very successful debut in the competition.

In Pool A UAE beat Saudi Arabia 2-1 in a tie that was decided in the doubles rubber. Fahad Al Saad put Saudi Arabia in the lead with a 75 60 victory over Hamad Abbas Janahi but Omar Awadhy restored the balance in the tie with a 62 62 victory over Omar Thagib. The deciding doubles point was taken by the UAE's pair of Awadi and Janahi against Al Saad and Al Thagib with a 62 62 score in exactly one hour.

The other tie in Pool A saw Turkmenistan continue their successful run in the Round Robin with a 3-0 victory over Iraq. Eziz Dovletov first earned his singles point with a victory over Ali Hashim 62 61 and then partnered with Jamshid Ilmuradov to get the final doubles point 64 63. The other victory for Turkmenistan was earned by Aleksandr Ernepesov with a 62 61 victory over Ahmed Abdulhasan.

Turkmenistan is the leader in Pool A and have yet to drop a single set in their first two ties.

Cambodian team captain Tep Rithivit, said: “It has been such a long journey and we’ve worked so hard. We felt like the dark horses coming into this event – but very prepared dark horses. All that work has really paid off and it means so much to move on to the Group III stage. Imagine what we have achieved in our first season with less than 30 tennis courts in the whole of Cambodia. The complex in Doha has 27 courts. That puts this amazing feat in perspective. It is such an inspiration for all the tennis playing kids back home.”

Tournament Director, Saad Al Mohannadi, said: “The Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group IV event here in Qatar brought together ten very different teams all with the same goal – to play for their country and showcase their abilities. We had wonderful round-robin match play all week long and the play-offs today were nothing short of superb as all the players put 100 per cent effort into moving on in the world standings.”

Davis Cup by BNP Paribas is the largest annual international team competition in sport with 123 nations entered in 2012. The title sponsor is BNP Paribas, the Official Bank of Davis Cup. International sponsors are HP (Official Technology Sponsor), Rolex (Official Timekeeper) Hugo Boss (Official Men's Fashion Clothing Sponsor), Adecco (Official HR Sponsor) and NH Hoteles (Official Hotel). Wilson Sporting Goods (Official Ball) is an international partner. The 100th Davis Cup Final will take place on 16-18 November at the start of the ITF centenary celebrations in 2013. DAVIS CUP PLAY-OFF TO BE HELD IN CANADA
South Africa declines its right to host

Montreal, May 14, 2012 – Canadian tennis fans will have the chance to support their Davis Cup team on home soil this September as their Davis Cup play-off opponent, South Africa, who had been awarded “choice of ground” in a draw, elected to play in Canada.

“We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to play in front of a home crowd for this important match-up,” said Davis Cup Captain Martin Laurendeau. “Fan support is a major advantage in Davis Cup ties and we know that with the recent rise of popularity of tennis in our country, we’ll have great support.”

Canada is now exploring options for a host location throughout the country for the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group play-off to be held on Sept. 14-16. The winner of the tie will qualify for the World Group in 2013 while the losing team will return to its respective zone.

The Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Semifinal between the U.S. and Spain to be held in Gijon, Spain

The Spanish Tennis Federation announced today that the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Semifinal between the U.S. and Spain will be held on an outdoor red clay court at the Parque Hermanos Castro in Gijon, Spain. The semifinal tie will be held September 14-16.

The U.S. and Spain have met 10 times in Davis Cup play, with the series tied at 5 wins each. Spain defeated the U.S. in the 2011 quarterfinal in Austin, Texas, and in the 2008 semifinal on red clay in Madrid, Spain. The U.S. last beat Spain in the 2007 quarterfinal on an indoor hard court in Winston-Salem, N.C., en route to capturing its record 32nd Davis Cup title.

The U.S. is undefeated in three road ties under U.S. Davis Cup Captain Jim Courier – all of which have been played on red clay – including wins over Switzerland and France in 2012.

Should the U.S. defeat Spain in the semifinals, it will advance to the Davis Cup final for the first time since winning the title in 2007, and would either host the Czech Republic or travel to Argentina.

DAVIS CUP BY BNP PARIBAS RETURNS TO MONTREAL IN SEPTEMBER

Milos Raonic and Canada will play South Africa on Court 1 at Uniprix Stadium from September 14-16, 2012

Montreal, June 12, 2012 – After South Africa gave up its right to host the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas tie against the Miele Canadian Davis Cup team, Tennis Canada has selected Montreal to stage the World Group playoff tie. The matches will be played on Court 1 at Uniprix Stadium from September 14-16, 2012.

"South Africa is a tough opponent, so being able to play at home in front of our fans is a great advantage," said Team Canada captain Martin Laurendeau. "Our team has gained a lot of experience over the past few years and our results show that we belong with the best countries in the world. This tie is important for us to keep our place in the World Group.”

Davis Cup returns to the province of Quebec for the first time since 2006 when Canada defeated Venezuela at the Granby Tennis Club. Furthermore, 1997 marks the last time that a Davis Cup tie was held in Montreal. That year, Canada played two ties in the city, defeating both Venezuela and the Bahamas.

"We are very happy to be able to host a prestigious event like Davis Cup in Montreal," said Eugène Lapierre, Vice-President of Professional Tennis in Quebec. "Montrealers have proven in the past that they are passionate tennis fans and we are proud to offer them the opportunity to live the unique experience that is Davis Cup which is unlike any other tournament played throughout the year.”

Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) will play in Montreal for the first time since his remarkable climb up the ATP World Tour rankings. His last visit to Montreal came in 2009 at the Rogers Cup when he qualified for the main draw and fell to Chilean Fernando Gonzalez in a tightly contested first round encounter. Daniel Nestor (Toronto, ON), one of the greatest doubles players of all-time, will also be in action. Vasek Pospisil (Vancouver, BC), Frank Dancevic (Niagara Falls, ON) and Peter Polansky (Thornhill, ON) are among the players who could be named to the Miele Canadian Davis Cup team for the tie.

"The whole team is very excited to play in Montreal," said Nestor, veteran of the Canadian squad. "It is a city we know very well having played the Rogers Cup on many occasions and the atmosphere is always amazing. We know that we will be able to count on great crowd support."

South Africa and Canada have played once before in Davis Cup, a century ago in 1913 and it was Canada who came away with the victory.

In February, the Canadian squad lost its World Group first round tie to France, in Vancouver. As a result of this loss, the Canadians now have to defend their place among the world’s elite, and a win against South Africa will allow them to keep their place in the World Group for 2013.

The matches will be played on Court 1 at Uniprix Stadium which has a capacity of 4,269 seats. Two singles matches will be played on Friday September 14. The doubles match will be held on Saturday September 15 and the reverse singles matches will be contested on Sunday September 16. Times will be announced shortly. Sportsnet and TVA Sports will provide comprehensive coverage of the Davis Cup; broadcast details will be announced by the networks in the coming months.

Tickets will go on sale June 18. Please note that from this date until August 14, only Rogers Cup presented by National Bank ticket holders will be able to purchase tickets for Davis Cup. They can do so by calling 1-855-TENNIS-0.

Davis Cup by BNP Paribas is the biggest international team event and features more than 130 countries. Only 16 countries qualify for the prestigious World Group every year.
