Agree. And he was also an avid player. One of those people that contributed a lot to the sport, and few people know about that.

    Re: In Memoriam

His successor, Ghouliani, undid many of the things Mayor Dinkins did to make the US Open experience more enjoyable because, paraphrasing his words, tennis is an elitist sport and Dinkins was favoring "them".

David Dinkins was a big indirect part of my New York life. Besides his huge influence on tennis in New York (besides what he did for US Open, he also played a part in the NY Junior Tennis league, a youth program TAT used to partner with that produced James Blake and brought countless underserved kids to tennis). He taught at Columbia, my alma mater (I've ridden elevators with him, he was very friendly, polite, seemed very down to earth). I also lived in a Harlem apartment complex where he had lived for ~25 years before becoming mayor.

I've yet to find a New Yorker who had a negative thing to say about him (I'm sure plenty exist because it's, well, New York and because he was mayor in a difficult time...)

    May he rest in peace.

For our country music fans, Hal Ketchum, pretty popular in the 90s, passed away today at 67 years old. His song, "Sure Love", has been on my top 10 favorites of all time since he released it.

    May he rest in peace.
    Oh Grigor. You silly man.

Diego Maradona has died of heart attack at age 60. Big news in Argentina for sure.

As an England supporter he'll always be 'the hand of God' for me. He lived hard, but was a tremendous footballer.

You could hardly watch English football on TV for most of the 80s, let alone Maradona at Boca, Barcelona + Napoli.
And then, at Mexico 86, he took the world by storm with Argentina. And we all watched, our mouths wide open.
    “Genius, genius, genius!”
    RIP.

As a footballer, no discussion. A true great one.

    Re: In Memoriam

As a football player, a great if not the greatest. Otherwise, a human with all his faults (I give him less leniency because he had the tools to improve himself) and a rough background that may have hampered his ability to navigate fame and wealth.

Not a social role model and certainly not an ideological one.

OTOH, he seemed a genuinely nice person on a 1-to-1 basis.
