Spy Agency: North Korea Executes Its Defense Chief With Anti-Aircraft Guns
    MAY 13, 2015 8:25 AM ET

Just days after grabbing international attention for reportedly testing a submarine-fired ballistic missile, North Korea executed its defense chief on the order of dictator Kim Jong Un. That's according to South Korea's spy agency, which briefed Seoul's lawmakers on the development Wednesday.

The execution reportedly took place in public, with hundreds of onlookers watching as Hyon Yong Chol was killed by firing squad, using anti-aircraft guns. The reported offense? Falling asleep during a meeting and showing disrespect to Kim.

Hyon has represented North Korea in meetings abroad, most recently with a trip to Russia in April. Kim has yet to leave the country since coming to power following his father's death in 2011.

This move is the latest in a series of leadership changes — and purges — since the younger Kim has taken charge. South Korea's spies said 15 officials were executed last month. And in a notable move shortly after becoming North Korea's absolute ruler, Kim ordered the execution of his uncle, who had amassed loyalty among North Korea's top brass during the leadership of Kim's father, Kim Jong Il.

"You have to prevent any coalition from forming against you ... deter others from challenging you through this violence," said Daniel Pinkston, Seoul-based Northeast Asia deputy project director for the International Crisis Group. "That's really the horrible nature, the violent nature of a dictatorship. But if you're unwilling to do that, others will, and they will push you out of the leadership."

Rohingya Muslims brave death at sea to escape 'open-air prison' in Burma

Members of the Rohingya ethnic minority have taken to the sea to flee persecution in Burma, but their options are narrowing as Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia refuse new migrants. Residents of the cramped Aung Ming Lar ghetto reveal a bitterly hard life with many willing to risk everything to get away.

    Thousands attend counter-protest in Macedonia
Show of strength comes after opposition supporters blame PM for corruption, phone tapping and ethnic tensions.
    18 May 2015 21:10 GMT

Gruevski has been accused of corruption, phone-tapping and of fomenting ethnic tensions to hang on to power [Reuters]

Tens of thousands of Macedonians have turned out to support Nikola Gruevski's government in a counter-protest after opposition supporters marched through the capital Skopje a day earlier to demand the prime minister's resignation.

The opposition accuses Gruevski of corruption, tapping the phones of thousands of people and of fomenting ethnic tensions to hang on to power.

Al Jazeera's Robin Forestier-Walker, reporting from Skopje, said a large crowd of government supporters playing Macedonian nationalist music and carrying Macedonian and Serbian flags assembled outside the parliament building on Monday night.
He said the crowd of supporters appeared much larger than the numbers of opposition protesters, estimated by some at 20,000, who had set up camp about 2km away, although they were confined into a narrow strip in front of the parliament building.
"There was a show of strength by the opposition but this is an indication that Gruevski also has broad support," he said.

Macedonia, a small Balkan country, is deeply divided by a year-long political crisis after disputed elections in April 2014, and still in shock after a bloody clash between police and ethnic Albanian men left 18 dead earlier this month.

The clash was the worst violence since the country narrowly avoided civil war after an ethnic Albanian uprising in 2001.
"Interestingly enough, you won't see any Albanian flags," our correspondent said, speaking of Monday's pro-government rally.
"The Albanian population makes up 25 percent of the population in Macedonia , but they don't seem to be represented here."
Gruevski, who only months ago seemed to have a firm grip on power, has also weathered the resignation last week of two key ministers and the implication of his intelligence chief in the phone-tapping scandal.

Sunday's march - called by Zoran Zaev's Social Democratic SDSM - brought many ethnic Albanians and Turks onto the streets as well as protesters from the Macedonian community.

Al Jazeera's Forestier-Walker said Zaev has been releasing self-styled "political bombs" - carefully choreographed news conferences in which audio recordings of taped phone conversations between Gruevski and his appointees implicated them in serious abuses of power ranging from vote-rigging to multi-million-dollar kickbacks.

The government says that the recordings have been faked, and accuses Zaev of seeking to destabilise Macedonia.

Well, it's great that folks are now willing to take them in, but at the risk of sounding like a broken record, at some point someone needs to address what these people are escaping. Particularly for the Rohingya people. They are not migrants. They are victims of a systematic political genocide. (And genocide is not a word I throw around carelessly.)

You have to be very well read to know what is happening in Burma(Myanmar). Some are questioning why Aung San Suu Kyi has been so quiet.

These ethnic/religious differences don't only affect Eastern Europe and the African continent. This has been building for a long time.

Aung San Suu Kyi is no saint. Quite the contrary. She's actually one of the most confusing people on this planet.

No one will do time, either. You've gotta be walking down a street with pot in your pocket to do time.

5 Banks to Pay Billions and Plead Guilty in Currency and Interest Rate Cases

Adding another entry to Wall Street’s growing rap sheet, five big banks have agreed to pay about $5.6 billion and plead guilty to multiple crimes related to manipulating foreign currencies and interest rates, federal and state authorities announced on Wednesday.

The Justice Department forced four of the banks — Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Barclays and the Royal Bank of Scotland — to plead guilty to antitrust violations in the foreign exchange market as part of a scheme that padded the banks’ profits and enriched the traders who carried out the plot. The traders were supposed to be competitors, but much like companies that rigged the price of vitamins and automotive parts, they colluded to manipulate the largest and yet least regulated market in the financial world, where some $5 trillion changes hands every day, prosecutors said.

Underscoring the collusive nature of their contact, which often occurred in online chat rooms, one group of traders called themselves “the cartel,” an invitation-only club where stakes were so high that a newcomer was warned, “Mess this up and sleep with one eye open.”

To carry out the scheme, which went on nearly every day for five years through 2012, one trader would typically build a huge position in a currency and then unload it at a crucial moment, hoping to move prices. Traders at the other banks agreed to, as New York State’s financial regulator put it, “stay out of each other’s way.”
