The Netherlands have been three times World Cup Runner ups (men's). So maybe not that big a shock.

Yeah but...that's mens There are some very big differences...for example Canada - 100th ranked in the mens (with 0 World Cup goals, just one winless appearance), 4th in women (4th in one wc and two Olympic bronze.)

Looking at the Netherlands previous history - one world cup appearance (1-1-1), never made Olympics. So it would be a fairly big shocker. I like that the wiki page already has decided that this "highly contributed to the popularity of women's football in the Netherlands."

Womens (field) hockey may be the biggest women's sport there...they have won 7 of the 13 World Cups. 2000 was the last time they didn't reach the final of a World Cup or Olympics (and even then they were third.)

U.S. sanctions Mexican soccer star Rafael Marquez for alleged drug ties

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The U.S. Treasury Department said on Wednesday it had sanctioned Mexican soccer star Rafael Marquez for allegedly serving as a front man for a suspected drug trafficker.

Marquez, from the cartel-riddled state of Michoacan, played in Europe for club sides Barcelona and Monaco, and still occasionally captains the national team, having represented his country in four World Cups.

Marquez, along with singer Julio Cesar Alvarez and almost two dozen other Mexican nationals, is accused of financial ties with Raul Flores Hernandez, a suspected drug trafficker with links to the Sinaloa cartel and the Jalisco New Generation gang.

I wonder if the US Treasury understand the difference between FINANCIAL TIES and "You do this for us or we kill you and your whole family" TIES.
As if Mexicans had a real government that will protect them from any cartel.

I said to myself when I read it that he doesn't have much choice other than cooperate with those people. This seems like another attempt to demonize all Mexicans.

NBA, union urge players to pursue social consciousness
    Sep 7, 2017
    Adrian Wojnarowski
    ESPN

NBA commissioner Adam Silver and National Basketball Players Association executive director Michele Roberts co-signed a preseason letter to the league's players encouraging them in the pursuit of social consciousness.

In the letter, obtained by ESPN, Silver and Roberts told the players, "None of us operates in a vacuum. Critical issues that affect our society also impact you directly. Fortunately, you are not only the world's greatest basketball players -- you have real power to make a difference in the world, and we want you know that the Players Association and the League are always available to help you figure out the most meaningful way to make that difference."

The NBA's letter comes as the NFL grapples with its players' social expressions, including players kneeling during the national anthem.

Roberts and Silvers' letter also commended players on work in NBA communities, Basketball Without Borders events and Hurricane Harvey fundraising.

My company worked with the NBA teams last year on some internal Diversity & Inclusion work. They organization seemed pretty serious about it, and looks like they're delving in further. Unfortunately, a lot depends on individual team leadership/ownership, and commitment there varies.

There's an informal and totally unorganized boycott of the NFL going on. I don't think it's the cause of Thursday Night Football's lowest ratings ever but I'm waiting to see if viewership of the NBA picks up earlier than usual.

Ti, I have no idea what you are talking about, since football (American football) is a sport I don't follow even from the outmost periphery. I've been boycotting that sport since the last of my marching band days at NC State (and that was a very long while ago). And for no reason other than I can't stand it.

So.....why is there a boycott? (a very brief answer will be fine). Thanks....GH

    Re: Other Sports Random, Random

Ti, You don't need to answer that.....I looked it up. Now that I know what the boycott is about, I will gladly join it. So now I have another reason other than "I can't stand American football" to justify my ongoing boycott of the sport. GH

I had to look up whether it was for concussions, anthem kneeling, or domestic violence coverups (among other issues). It's anthem kneeling.

I've also been unintentionally boycotting football since the 2011 Superbowl (which was the first game I saw since leaving Texas in 2005) and now I can pretend I was just ahead of the times!
