So, this is Shahar's first tournament back after the foot injury?

Honestly, I would not. Maybe there's a tennis cult of personality.

I think his point was that if they had met in the quarterfinals it could possibly have been a better quality match since they would have had a few matches to get their game going.
I also don't think anyone would have considered either Maria or Lindsay as FORMER top players at that time. And I would rather see Maria blow out Lindsay any day than a competitive match between two random scrubs, but maybe that's just me.

Neither of them are bad players but no one who should be beating Kimmy at full strength.
But she didn't rehab the injury nor did she have any interest in doing so. She retired. At the time, the feeling I got was that it was not at all set in stone that she'd be coming back...ever.

and me too. I would take the '08 Australian final beatdown any day over the epic, still-entertaining match between Peer and Vaidisova at the '07 US Open (those examples are just off the top of my head).

Interesting. I'm in the Peer/Vaidisova seats.

Only because Lindsay's the one losing.

And I actually meant '07 beatdown. Because those are perhaps the 2 most well-known players in the world. The '08 final wasn't so much a beatdown as a decisive victory...

And Maria's grass court pedigree doesn't come close to Kim's hardcourt pedigree, in my opinion. Maria's got 4 grass court titles (1 Slam, 0 Tier 1s), with the last one coming 3 years ago. Kim's got 29 hardcourt titles (1 Slam, 4 Tier 1s), and she's won a hardcourt tournament more recently than Maria's won a grass tournament!
I won't take sides on this, since I'm still making up my mind on the issue (add that to the list of things where TAT makes you change your mind, or, in this case, make up your mind on something you had never thought about before).
However, your point may be skewed due to the fact that there's MANY more hardcourt tournaments than grass tournaments, so you have MANY more possibilites of making it to 29 (also, are there any Tier I grass tournaments?). Then there is also the fact than Kim's career has been longer than Maria's, which also helps.

Maybe not so much Maria as Lindsay (and I say this as a die-hard of Lindsay, just being realistic). But I would much rather watch a competitive match between Lucie Hradecka and Rosanna De Los Rios rather than a blowout between Kuznetsova and Jankovic. No matter who it is everyone likes to watch a match that can go either way.

I can't agree. Competitive doesn't necessarily mean high quality and in the example above I fear it would be painfully obvious that it is a third rate encounter.

I saw some very competitive matches at the French Open this year that were like having my teeth pulled very slowly. Gimme the cruddy star-studded blowout.
