    Re: Let's Discuss Religion.

Are you Catholic? I was under the impression you were atheist and can't imagine you're Catholic if you're calling the Pope by that acronym. You seem to have an open disdain for religion. If not Catholic, then how do you know people don't know how to be Catholic with Pope Francis?

    Re: Let's Discuss Religion.

I do not have an open disdain for religion. Disdain does not even come close.
I live in a very (hypocritical) Catholic country, came from one and know my Catholics really well. I stay away from the conversation because, as this thread can attest, people go bonkers over the subject.
But when you have a Pope that continuously gives ambivalent statements, like the ones about the sexual abuse issues within the church, yes, people get confused. And I have Catholic friends to attest to that.

I want to remind everyone of the importance of praying for @POTUS @realDonaldTrump this Sun., June 2. We need to pray for him as he carries out his duties, that God will give him wisdom in every decision he makes & protect him from his enemies who would like to see him fall. 1/3

This is getting quite a bit of reaction on Twitter.

A reminder that Catholics should not support or attend LGBTQ “Pride Month” events held in June. They promote a culture and encourage activities that are contrary to Catholic faith and morals. They are especially harmful for children.

    Re: Random, Random!

    I agree with the bishop.
The church's policy about LGBTQ people is clear cut. Gay men are abomination, as stated twice in the Bible.
So be consistent. If you are a catholic, follow that rule. The catholic church is not a democracy so you have to be a retrograde inquisitionist. If you stand with LGBTQ people, leave the catholic church.
Until the Church modernizes you can't have it both ways.

And I hope the level of sarcasm is understood (my sarcasm, not their cynicism).

    1. It is important to point out the Biblical illiteracy of RW evangelists like @Franklin_Graham because they have spent decades converting ignorance of a religion to a political cult. Pointing out their general evil is not enough - the way to instill doubt in their followers...

2...is by showing how they violate the Bible they pretend to follow. Now, this isn't about the obvious - how theyve turned Jesus's message of love to one of hate. No, this is much simpler: They have abandoned their individual faith called for by Jesus to join a political cult..

3...so, always, judge them by the words they claim to follow. I have found it is the only way any of them listen and consider their hypocrisy.

Graham has called for a national day of prayer for Trump. No surprise -performance prayers are at the hear of the fundraising by these..

4...charlatans. Performance prayer gets the money flowing in. But they always make them events, public proclamations held at a particular moment, the exact kind of thing that promotes cultish behavior.

And, in the process, they directly violate the words of Jesus in the Bible...

5...Jesus only speaks to God in public when asking for a blessing of food. Whenever he prays, he goes off by himself. He, unlike frauds like Graham, follows his own words.

First, no performance prayer should ever be done. Jesus in Matthew 6:6-8 makes clear Graham is a fraud...

6...You are never - even if it gets charlatans more money - to pray in public. Matthew 6:6: "When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." How do the frauds manage...

7...to convince the cultists to go into big stadiums and wave their arms? Because they are Biblically illiterate. And as for going out, waving their arms in public, Jesus said in Matthew 6:5: "When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to...."

8..."...pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full." What about praying for politicians? Yah, no. "When you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be....

9..."...because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him."
Jesus makes clear, go to a closet by yourself, close the door, and in secret recital the Lord's prayer - and ONLY the Lord's prayer.

    But this isn't fun, this....

10..isn't about going out and proclaiming devotion to a politician or a country - as if the God of the bible gives a damn about a country that didn't even exist until a couple of centuries ago. Those are about performance, reinforcing personal hate and political belief....

11...transforming faith into politics. I often pointed out the hypocrisy of evangelicals who - as usual - ignored the Bible they profess to follow under Obama as they attacked him endlessly. Because in Romans 13, Paul wrote....

12..."There is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves."...

13...of course, when Obama was president, evangelicals ignored this and some literally ridiculed me for pointing out these words. NOW they invoke them, saying no one should question Trump.

Now, this was not a Bible lesson. Im not pushing a faith. What I AM saying....

14...is the ONLY way to confront these people is not by stating your own beliefs about the existence of God or they value hypocrisy - that never gets anywhere. Hit them with the words they don't know but claim to follow. Force them to explain why they do the opposite of what...

15...the Bible says so they can wave their arms in public prayers on behalf of a politician or a country. And when they refuse to bend their preferences to the obvious words of the Bible, say this:

"Well, Jesus most condemned the hypocrites. You know, people like you."

    end

    Re: Let's Discuss Religion.

There's just one problem... According to the gospels, written by different people and likely based entirely on oral tradition, Jesus prayed in public numerous times. Sometimes to bless food, sometimes to heal someone, etc. So the gospels are not consistent in their teaching about prayer.

Not to mention that your run of the mill evangelical cult member doesn't give a rat's ass about what the apocalyptic prophet named Jesus said or did.
