Those in the Pacific are called typhoons, possibly less frequent but just as deadly. In Indian ocean they're called cyclones, mostly striking the East coast of India and sometimes Arabian peninsula and the horn of Africa. Southern hemisphere seems not to have them neither in the Atlantic nor Indian oceans.

@suliso, they still call many of the ones watched for the US hurricanes, even if they may technically be cyclones. There have been named hurricanes in recent years that have hit or just pass by Hawaii for instance. And unfortunately, a couple of disastrous ones in the last 10 years that have hit Cabos San Lucas hard.

The point was that the western Pacific will get hurricanes (typhoons) that are as strong as the ones that we get in the US, but we don't usually hear very much about them, because they are not affecting the US.

There some there occasionally. I seem to remember Mozambique getting hit by a cyclone a couple of times - there just isn't much news about it here.

Slowed a little today so not expected to hit here until Wednesday AM now and less likely will be a hurricane. Also heading more east in our province. So overall a good news day.

Also went for a pre-hurricane swim in a lake... almost too cold to go in now (and my standards are something.)

Sped up a bit and may hit us tonight now... 100% chance of tropical storm, but looks like they aren't expecting any chance of it still being a hurricane at least.

Quite the imagery from #GOESEast today. Hurricane Teddy off New England is racing northward towards the Canadian Maritimes, and remnants of Tropical Storm Beta over Tx and the Plains. The thin, dark grey shade over the NE is some smoke aloft within the jet stream from the fires.

I think this is the first time in my lifetime they've run out of names for tropical storms/hurricanes. They're now going Alpha, Beta, etc.

I only remember it happening one time, though I'd guess there are others. And it was 2005, which is obviously a terrible year to be referencing as a comparison point for storms.

    Stay safe @ptmcmahon
