Re: National, Regional and Local News

ScienceDaily (Nov. 18, 2008) — The first tissue-engineered trachea (windpipe), utilising the patient's own stem cells, has been successfully transplanted into a young woman with a failing airway. The bioengineered trachea immediately provided the patient with a normally functioning airway, thereby saving her life.

These remarkable results provide crucial new evidence that adult stem cells, combined with biologically compatible materials, can offer genuine solutions to other serious illnesses.
In particular, the successful outcome shows it is possible to produce a tissue-engineered airway with mechanical properties that permit normal breathing and which is free from the risks of rejection seen with conventional transplanted organs. The patient has not developed antibodies to her graft, despite not taking any immunosuppressive drugs. Lung function tests performed two months after the operation were all at the better end of the normal range for a young woman.
The pan-European team from the universities of Barcelona, Bristol, Padua and Milan report on this pioneering work in an article in The Lancet.

This is a huge step forward in the organ donating field. In the long run this is the first step in a process that could save millions of people lives in the future. Very, very cool

Just read that an 8 y.o. kid is going to be tried in AZ after killing his father and a co-worker and confessing. Anyone heard anything about this?

Earlier today, MSNBC said the boy made his confession without a guardian, psychologist, or lawyer present. The newscaster switched to another topic after that.

I've been hearing about it for about a week and a half. Oddly, comcast.net has had decent coverage of it. Who knew? Anyway, here is an AP article from today that goes into some detail.
    B*tch, please

Some want him tried as an adult.

I've known about it for about a week or so now. It seems like one of those stories that is only going to get worse.

This thread started with an 8 year old with a gun and is back to an 8 year old with a gun. The uzi boy's father deserves every bit of misery he has coming to him for the rest of his life and the other 8 year old, well his father seemed to have it coming. Leaving guns and bullets around house is just plain stupid and charging that boy as an adult is even more stupid.

WASHINGTON — Animals and plants in danger of becoming extinct could lose the protection of government experts who make sure that dams, highways and other projects don't pose a threat, under regulations the Bush administration is set to put in place before President-elect Obama can reverse them.
The rules must be published Friday to take effect before Obama is sworn in Jan. 20. Otherwise, he can undo them with the stroke of a pen.
The Interior Department rushed to complete the rules in three months over the objections of lawmakers and environmentalists who argued that they would weaken how a landmark conservation law is applied.
    (...)
The rules eliminate the input of federal wildlife scientists in some endangered species cases, allowing the federal agency in charge of building, authorizing or funding a project to determine for itself if it is likely to harm endangered wildlife and plants.
Current regulations require independent wildlife biologists to sign off on these decisions before a project can go forward, at times modifying the design to better protect species.
The regulations also bar federal agencies from assessing emissions of the gases blamed for global warming on species and habitats, a tactic environmentalists have tried to use to block new coal-fired power plants.
    (...)
If successful, the Bush administration will accomplish through rules what conservative Republicans have been unable to achieve in Congress: ending some environmental reviews that developers and other federal agencies blame for delays and cost increases on many projects.
