And a gold for Spain: Samuel Sanchez wins Road Cycling gold. That's the first time we have a gold on the first day. Congrats to the cycling team!

This is a thread for Contest-related medal discussion only, right?

    Re: Medal news from Beijing!

It is with great sadness that I report that Georgia has failed to win one of those shiny pretty things in Judo-Men's 66 kg. Unfortunately, they went to Japan (GOLD ), France (Silver), Cuba (Bronze), and something called DPRK (Bronze). We at Goldenland don't pay attention to places without glitter, so I am not quite sure where this "DPRK" is, but I have been told they share our goal of World Domination, so we have decided not to start nuclear warfare against them, since they might retaliate. France, who weren't even supposed to be in contention for this event, is going down, however.

We are going to send our mascot to France for a year-long nationwide class in shaping up! He's on his way already!

We also planned on destroying the country where our losing pick hails from, Georgia, but it looks like they're in the process already.

It should also be noted that the hilly country of Paszekland received GOLD in this event. That is abominable and MUST BE STOPPED.

    His Fabulousness,

It is with greater happiness that I send this second dispatch today. The Gold went to the right country, South Korea, in women's archery. Congratulations, PARK Sung-Hyun, YUN Ok-Hee, JOO Hyun-Jung, you get to live!

China and France also won something.

Meanwhile, HFRS sent this postcard from the Riviera

    More fabulous than ever,

Kudos to the Korean lady archers for putting e11evenia in the medal board! Was bummed for not picking China in weightlifting, thinking Thailand could land a 2-3 finish! Although judo was born in Japan, I was far from picking the Japanese judoka based on supposedly "intelligent" research (never really works on TAT contests!!!).

How do we throw countries into the lake?! Should we throw them into the ocean instead?!

Well, yeah, but don't sweat it... Paszekland is in DEEP doo-doo for completely botching its approach to the men's 100m backstroke. In its determination to save the United States for another event, where it's a pretty sure bet, Paszekland failed to recognize that the U.S. is a pretty sure bet to win TWO medals in the 100m backstroke.

    Pigheadedness can be painful.

WOOHOO! Italy had a 1-3 finish in women's individual foil fencing!

They could have swept the medal podium, but a Korean fencer sneaked in with a silver..

many of us had similar country choices, but Scottystan is very pleased to have 3 golds, 2 silvers, and 2 bronzes at the end of Block 1.

Since it's been determined that every country ending in -Stan harbors international terrorists, Goldenland is hereby waging war on Scottystan in order to protect its own future. We will take your medals and melt them into material for our gorgeous fighter planes, with which we will later bomb you.
