Re: Kirkus' Astrophotography Thread

This July 2012 image taken from video provided by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) shows ribbons of plasma and magnetic lines bursting from the sun. Stretching from one active region to another, magnetic field lines cause the looping formations. (AP Photo/Solar Dynamics Observatory/NASA)

While that image is real, I don't believe it is from the current Curiosity mission.

You are right. It was taken by Opportunity rover and it is sunset. Still amazing though

Actually it was taken by Spirit in 05.

Sort of random, sorry, but I stumbled across some really gorgeous hi-res photos of Saturn here:

These are from the Cassini spacecraft.

Must be seen to be believed. Utterly riveting. This is actual video of the guy falling to earth -- no graphics or animation.

I'm not usually a fan of "extreme" activities/sports, but I've been following this and really hoping he was successful. That freaking video is just mesmerizing.
Thanks for the post.

My favorite part was just sitting up there looking over the Earth, though. Really amazing no matter how many times you see similar shots. There's just something to seeing the planet, it's curvature, glowing against the black beyond that stretches off into the unknown. I don't have the words to express it, but know many feel the same way.
