TEN women have a mathematical chance of being #1 after the Australian Open. TEN. TEN!!!!!!

    Safe points after the AO

    Halep - 5352
    Stephens - 5077
    Osaka - 5040
    Kvitova - 5000
    Kerber - 4735
    Svitolina - 4520
    Bertens - 4370
    Pliskova - 4330
    Wozniacki - 3446
    Sabalenka - 3365
    Their places in the draw:
    Halep/Pliskova
    Osaka/Svitolina
    Kvitova-Sabalenka/Wozniacki
    Stephens-Bertens/Kerber
Halep, Stephens, Osaka, Kvitova, Kerber, and Svitolina are all masters of their own fate. Win and you're #1.

Bertens would have to beat anyone other than Halep in the final.

Pliskova would have to beat anyone other than Stephens in the final.

Wozniacki is boxed out if Halep makes the 3rd round, Stephens or Osaka makes the QF, Kerber makes the SF, Svitolina or Pliskova makes the final.

Sabalenka is boxed out if Halep makes the 2nd round, Stephens or Osaka makes the QF, Kerber makes the SF, Svitolina or Pliskova makes the final.

(If Halep pulls out before her 1st round, Kasatkina has a chance too!)

That's impressive! I'm betting on either Kerber or Kvitova.

In ATP Nadal has a chance, but only if Nole loses before QF's.

And this doesnt even include Serena, the eventual champion

I have a feeling Serena will lose before the finals this time. Not betting all my money on it, though

Agree. I assume she’s healthy. Made last 2 Slam finals. I dont know why people are overlooking her.

We aren't overlooking, or at least I'm not. I'm merely predicting that she won't win this particular title.

I hope that this battle for #1 goes all the way to the final, or at least late into the 2nd week. It feels like many of the recent Grand Slams where the #1 was up for grabs it was decided by the 4th round because all the contenders had already lost.

It was decided in the final exactly a year ago.

It’s not just here. A lot of pundits, too. I’m not a Serena fan. I’m just baffled by what seems like a big gap in logic.

ESPN said it's 11 women with a mathematical chance (I haven't looked into it and I would stack my bet on Charlie's math over ESPN's...)

Give me even odds and I'll take the field every single time. Let me know if you (or anyone else) want my action

They're technically right. Kasatkina has a mathematical chance, but only if Halep withdraws before the first round. As soon as she plays one point, she earns 10 ranking points for the loss, and Kasatkina is boxed out.

The other possibility is that they forgot losing in the first round changed from 1 point to 10 points.
