Re: Scalia Confirmed Dead at 79

If you really believe otherwise we can have an avatar bet. You say Srinivasan will be confirmed in 2016 and I say he will not. Whoever wins gets to choose the others avatar for 3 months. How about...

Dry, I'm sure you know quite well that in the current situations his qualification doesn't matter and neither does his politics. ;)

Re: Scalia Confirmed Dead at 79

If a candidate really wants to be on a Supreme court, is it smart from his/her point of view to accept invitation now when chances of being confirmed are so close to zero?

I'm personally totally unaffected by all this mess. For me it's just a political theatre so I'm more free to consider questions like this. :)

Re: Scalia Confirmed Dead at 79

Rhetoric question: last year of Bush presidency and the most liberal justice dies. If I remember correctly Democrats controlled Senate at that time. What would they have done?

Is supreme court very powerful in Argentina as well?

Such institutions exist also in Latvia and Switzerland, but I can't recall any recent instances of them being of importance outside purely...

Actually reasonable legal judgments going by what is actually written in the constitution would be very, very conservative. Reactionary even...

Re: Scalia Confirmed Dead at 79

It all come back to American concept of "living constitution" and that in turn goes back to virtual impossibility of actually changing that document. As long as that is true judges will be...

That's exactly why he is a frontrunner for the nomination at the moment. A large chunk of Republican voters prefer this kind of straight talk.

Re: Scalia Confirmed Dead at 79

Why would that shame them anyway? From a neutral point of view that doesn't make any sense. They have to fight for someone who shares their political ideology whatever the skin colour... It would be...

Re: Scalia Confirmed Dead at 79

Obama and democrats now have to think about their best strategy. They know actual confirmation is very unlikely, but how to turn all this it into a maximum political advantage?

Looks like Republicans aren't going to try any complicated games. Just a straight no on any confirmation.

Re: Scalia Confirmed Dead at 79

Not the same thing. Democrats rely on minority vote and thus can't antagonise them. Republicans have no such reason to back off.

It will be a political show now. If I was a Republican leader I'd...

Re: Scalia Confirmed Dead at 79

Why would Republicans care? They aren't winning more than 10% of African American vote anyway.

Whatever happens this will be a great motivation for many people to vote. Certainly on the right,...

Re: Scalia Confirmed Dead at 79

No way. Republicans in the Senate would have to be politically incompetent to confirm anything from a lame duck president. I'd be less surprised with Trump becoming a president.

Re: Scalia Confirmed Dead at 79

He might not have been a good man (depends from one's political ideology), but he was certainly a very important one.

It will be for the next president to appoint a replacement.
