A week ago, in the Australian Open Midterm Review, I wrote about the disappointing quality of play in the first few rounds at this year’s Australian Open. Unfortunately, the second week of the tournament showed little improvement. The overall intensity of most matches improved, as is to be expected when the stakes get higher for the players; but the tennis they demonstrated remained average at best.
