God, Venus will be eliminated before they even have the opening ceremony.

You have such high opinion of Monica Puig?

Yeah, having watched Puig play a couple of times last month I don't think she'll challenge Venus at the Open - but Venus can find ways to lose these types of matches are at least make them more competitive than they should be.

Venus has looked pretty Sjogrens-y this summer, so I don't know what to expect. On paper, she should power through to the R16 pretty easily, but her form has been so bad.

I can see your point though the loss in Toronto may have been as much related to the long delay before the match and the tournament pushing the players out so they could say the session was complete so they didn't have to give people tickets to next year.

I think Ashe and Armstrong are both incredible line ups.

How did Vania King get in? I though she might've retired it's been so long since hearing about her. She's currently ranked in the 400's and is 0-0 in matches this year. I didn't see her mentioned in the wildcards. A gift from the USTA? Why? I can't even remember her ever playing Fed Cup.

Must be a protected ranking. Too lazy to check where she was last year...

Yes, she's on the entry list as (SR) 73. On seeing her name my first thought was 'I thought she retired.' but I guess she's just been out with injury all year.

And as if Bouchard needed any more bad luck. Riske is a tough opponent for a player in such a tailspin.

I checked her Facebook page and she has had a neck/back injury and filed for a protective ranking in January.

I also looked up her profile, and surprisingly, she is only 26. It does seem like she's been playing for eons.

32 men's matches tomorrow!? Does that mean they've shelved the three days for the men's first round scheduling that they've done forever? Good news then--better men's matchups and means all the Canadians would be scheduled to play third round on Friday, when I'll be there.

Yes, they've gone back to traditional scheduling. Men's final back on Sunday.

A-ha, I see they've gone to the more sensible Australian/French Open schedule, with women's semis on Thursday, men's semis on Friday. No more super Saturday, but it's more fair to the players this way.

I have not been this excited for the first day of a Slam in a while. I'm not altogether sure why. But I'm kind of giddy.

Also, the students are back on campus today and already causing chaos in the library, and I've been mainlining coffee all morning. Perhaps relevant information.
