Is thisyour list, Mick, based on your methodology? Have you posted the list here? I'd like to see it. Thanks,

    Thanks!

It's interesting, but I think I missed something. Where did the 13.64.. for Nadal's 2010 come from, anyway? I didn't see that calculation in your post, or I must have overlooked it.
  5. mick1303's Avatar
This is a separate calculation, made as follows:

    1) I combine the table where each year of each player has one record. This record contains 10 columns for the data, presenting the results of certain player during certain year.
    2) In each column I find maximum and minimum value of a certain component : Cmax and Cmin. All components were described above.
    3) I “normalize” the content of each column, using the formula Cn = (C – Cmin) / (Cmax – Cmin).
    4) I apply weights to each normalized value and get “weighted” value.
    5) I sum all weighted values for each record.

In the end I have a table where each result of a particular player in a particular year is compared not only against other players but also against other years of himself.
Currently this table has 11444 records – I’ve made a cut and do not include a result if during a year player did not win a single match.

    Interesting.

I can see some value in doing it that way, though it still seems like the most unbiased way to do it is simply to rank each person on an absolute scale.

Theoretically, it penalizes one for never having a bad year, correct?
  7. mick1303's Avatar
Only if you accept the logic, that each player is capable of certain amount of wins and they are spreading through the years (more or less evenly). Therefore if you have a bad year, then “to compensate” next year you will win more.

I’m not subscribing to this. I’m more of the school of thinking “winning breeds confidence, which leads to more winning”.

So in my view having outstanding year does not mean that your next year is likely to be lousy (and vice versa)
