do we know that Tati, Schnyder and Elena are all playing? Miami is just an incredible line up for the ladies (but it won't replace Indian Wells in my heart!).

BTW Martina Hingis is also listed. :)

Craybas should be into the Main Draw.

Suliso has this been confirmed? I know she said she needs a rest but it was all speculation. Would SE let their spokesperson off the hook that easily?

You were posting the confirmation while I was posting the above. Shocking is putting it mildly.

Thanks Suliso, I really hope it's just fatigue and nothing more serious, but she is right her body is more important right now and she has played a lot of tennis.

I'm sure ESPN is happy knowing they are not covering this event and not losing much with Maria not playing. Hey don't attack me.

Foxy both Serena and Venus as well as Justine will be playing Miami. All rested.

I think Maria knew she was going to have to fight her way through a pretty tough draw and this is her way of saying "no mas". JMHO guys.

I wonder how Sony Ericsson having just finished paying her a s**tload of money to be their spokesperson feels about their star not appearing at their event?

Not really surprised to see Maria withdraw from Miami. It's best she doesn't over do it and screw up her shoulder again, or something.

Now, I just wait for word from Lindsay.

I understand where you are coming from Ti, but I remembered how fatigued Vee was after winning Wimby in 2005 and then playing Fed Cup etc.

Even if she saying "no mas" at least she's doing in before the tournament and maybe mentally she knows she could not do it so I honestly don't have issue with her doing it.

I had no idea that Sony Ericsson paid her to be their spokesperson. Maybe now they would consider the scheduling of IW and Miami. Oh well maybe they can find a substitute :cheesy:

Maria is SE's worldwide spokesperson. It's not just for Miami. She is the only tennis player designated. They didn't sign an agreement with the women of the WTA they signed it with Maria alone.

WOW, I had no idea, it's insulting to the others I would agree since Maria is not the WTA. Yes she's tall and blond and pretty (don't hit me) but there are others to and better players.

Well, that's not completely true. By being WTA's title sponsor, all the women have to do publiciity for Sony Ericsson. And I´m sure they all get bomuses for it

There are two separate contracts. Her contract is not part of the WTA Title sponsorship. I'm not saying the other girls are loving the situation, but I doubt they are getting nothing from Sony Ericsson

M8 here is an excerpt and the link.

I don't think so m8. The contract is with Maria not with the WTA Tour.

M8 here is an excerpt and the link.

Right, see, how it "complements" the 88 mil agreement with the tour?

OK one question. Isn't Sony Erricsson into cell phones and accessories? My question therefore is how is Maria doing this and still Motorola? Or is this something entirely different?

"the stunning and talented..." and in need of a nap. 21 year old girls DO NOT get fatigued after playing 5 matches!

This only adds to my frustration about her. At IW, she did a "signing" event, which I observed as I was going to catch up with Jessie and Salmon at the JCF event.

A line of a couple hundred people. Mostly kids, and a smattering of teenage boys.

Down the line comes security, announcing "Miss Sharapova will only be signing autographs for 15 minutes. And NO pictures".

This after I had witnessed Jelena come off court 2 post-match, sticking around to sign every single autograph request, smile for every picture asked, and make time for everyone.

You all can keep her. Maybe if she acquires some appreciation for fans someday, I'll give a crap about her.

Yeah 4m8 but you've got to admit that the emphasis in on Maria being the star and or the selected WTA player to be featured. This would not look to bad if they had named a number of the other top players.

Motorola dropped her and Maria didn't renew the contract.

Foxy, it'd be very expensive to have more players. It's just business. She's the most marketable.

How come I am not surprised?

But was it any easier to get a picture with Roger or Rafa or Lindsay? Some of the more popular players would probably never leave if they tried to sign everything...

This was at an event designated for autographs, Suliso. And was initially announced as 1/2 hour long.

I saw Roger in practice courts a number of times...same thing with Linds. Saw Rafa once, and saw him also on the soccer/warmup field I talked about. Any one of us that wanted pics of any of the three got them.

Maria, on the other hand...I would be shocked if any one of the 8 of us have a picture of her in any circumstance - on court, on a practice court, or anywhere else.

True but it could work if you do a group ad. It would basically be the same as with one player, give a little here or there. I honestly don't know if I buy that she's the most marketable. The thing is I do believe that an individual can be made marketable and while I agree some athelete market the product it not an unattainable task. I am hardly a marketing expert, but I don't think group ads are as effective as ones based on just one person. Maria is the most marketable player in US right now, because she is young (= will be around for a long time), pretty and wins GS tournaments. There is no one else who can match it.

And I doubt there is anyone who will be able to match it in near future... the closest is Ana as she is younger, prettier and CAN start winning slams soon, but I think it takes a certain personality to become as huge as Maria has become and I don't think Ana will get to that point.

Re: Motorola - I'm not just making it up, i read that they wanted out of tennis/athletes.

Group stuff doesn't work nearly as well, Suliso is right, particularly if you are going to give up star power for the number of people. I think Sony Ericsson did try - like that great Hantuchova-Ivanovic rooftop tennis commercial, but it must not have worked well enough.

Maria, Serena, and maybe Roger are the only active tennis players that have transgressed the athlete market and become celebrities. Between Maria and Serena, Maria (I know this is arguable, but I think it's true) is both more famous and more marketable worldwide.

It's just a really simple marketing decision. Is it going to make others happy? No. Is it fair business? Totally

Here are some photos, I think they're much worse than her stuff for Motorola. She looks 12 going on 40.

I think it's funny. She plays 5 matches and she's fatigued. Can't she come up with something at least mildly plausible?

Since Maria does not play many clay events to begin with, she is scheduling herself for a long vacation rest so she won't be fatigued.
But, Federer takes months off at a time. Normally, he takes 1 to 1.5 months off after AO and another 1 to 1.5 months off after Wimbledon.

Cronin on Maria's withdraw (from his Subscriber newsletter, so I am paraphrasing):

Maria's pullout is not due to a sore shoulder as she said in her official release. She claims to be mentally and physically exhausted after three months of travel, and has been struggling with a couple of viruses.

Look for her to wild card into Family Circle Cup.

And LA fans, unless she loses at Wimbledon early, she won't play LA this year. She doesn't want to play LA, then Canada, then the Olympics, then the USO

So, Fam Circle will have Justine, BOTH Williamses and Maria. And Jelena, trying to defend her title from 07. If I'm the organizers, I'm rolling in dough liking my line up.

And they are going to drop this as a Tier 1 next year? The appeal has to be tremendous to the players that they get a line up like this.

I think so too. One thing I noticed in her matches, particularly against Kuznetsova, is how much her movement has improved. Oddly, I think that she allowed herself to play a little bit more defensively because she can get to a lot more balls. She kind of abandoned her style of play at times. Strange.

Anyhoo, I'm stoked for Miami! I could get used to tennis being on TV on a regular basis.

Melbourne, Australia – 14th January 2008 – Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications has announced today that it has signed an exclusive four year sponsorship agreement with female tennis player, Maria Sharapova, to become the company’s first global brand ambassador.
"We are extremely pleased to sign Maria as our global brand ambassador. It is also a pleasure to know that she was using our latest model when she called in to tell that she would not be playing our most important tournament, and as a matter of fact, she did so by using our unique 'bland excuse' speed dial key, which is *Sh#t. She also loves her new speed dial mode for dad, which is the camouflage button on the lower left side (naturally)".
The stunning and talented Russian, who turns 21 in April this year, will undertake a series of innovative new consumer brand campaigns specifically designed to engage Sony Ericsson’s core target audiences and to utilize Maria away from the tennis court.
"We are aiming to attract 6 feet tall, statuesque, blond young Russian women named Maria, but so far, Kirilenko has refused our offer to give her a prepaid model for free. She actually wants money too, but Maria (the real one) took it all".
Maria will also be working with Sony Ericsson’s design team on a range of products and accessories.
"Maria is very interested in one of our products, which comes with a series of gadgets, amongst them a shoulder cast and a software package that blocks any utterance of the words 'you know'. It's called 'Apparel IQ', designed to, you know".
The off-court agreement complements Sony Ericsson’s 6 year $88 million global title sponsorship of the WTA Tour which was signed in January 2005 and is the biggest deal in the history of women’s sport.
"Maria will start using her phone as soon as she learns how to transfer her numbers from her old, rusty, crappy Motorola to her new shiny SE. We have sent one of our computer scientist from Japan to assist her in changing her SIM card, but it may be a while before that happens".
Sony Ericsson’s commitment to women’s tennis has energized the game by bringing fans closer to the experience and taking the sport to new audiences through cutting edge initiatives like night tennis – a fusion of tennis, fashion, music and dance.
"Like, you know, this deal was, you know, a natural synergy between, you know, the most recognized, beautiful, engaging and, you know, recognized and beautiful and engaging athlete woman in the world, you know".

I'm pretty sure Miami became mandatory in 2006; which was the only reason Lindsay Davenport hobbled down there with a bad back for the first time in years.

And I'm thinking I remember at the time Drysdale calling for the WTA to make PLO-IW a mandatory event too.

They said no pictures for the JCF event, too, but they ended up letting us take pics.....maybe they did the same for her?

But I agree, I'd be pissed off too if she was only going to be there for 15 minutes...I remember they were saying it was going to be more than 30 minutes, actually...but 30 minutes sounds about right.

I'm not a Jelena fan, as most of you know, but I do appreciate how she was there to sign autographs wherever she was (after/before practice, after her matches, etc)...the same can't be said for Maria.

Indeed, we did. I remember being surprised that Ana was taking pics and signing autographs BEFORE her practice session the first time I saw her practice (I think no one in our group was there except me..and then I ended up leaving because JCF was going to go practice)..I mean, she stood there and signed autographs and took pics with EVERYONE..I don't think she turned anyone down..and there were quite a few people.

I remember when Rafa and Feliciano were going to go practice, and someone said "Rafa, can I get a pic?" and he smiled, ran to take a pic with this kid, and then went back and said he'd take more after practice.

And yep, Roger was taking pics and signing autographs before his practice session as well....I don't know about Lindsay because I arrived there after she had already had started practicing (and missed when she left), but I'm sure she would have done the same.

Like Moose, I'd be shocked if any one of us would be able to get a pic with her...

hell, I doubt her people would even let us within 100 feet of her :p

With that said, I hope she can rest up in time for the green clay. I'm pretty sure she's going to play Family circle cup....or at least I would hope so.

Guga got Donald's wildcard!

This goes back to the debate raised when we first heard Guga WC'd into the main draw at Miami. I LOVE Gustavo, but to be honest, Donald Young could have done so much more with this wild card than Guga ever will. And now, DY may burn himself out playing possibly three matches in three days, while Guga will land in the draw, and go down in his first match in straights. And put a lot of Brazilian tushies in the stands doing so.

Guga is probably the most globally loved tennis player male or female of the past 10 years. His tennis resume speaks for itself. These are his last few months playing tennis.. people WILL come to see him. Donald has all future ahead of him and is at a point where he has to (or already did) earn the spot to play in the main draw by improved ranking.

All in all I agree with their decision. I think most of Miami tennis fans would to.

Young is now with Octagon! So IMG will not be doing him any favors!

Does she have a "washed up" thread yet? If not - phssst. She's not ready for prime time.:)

She's 2-10 in her last 12 finals, if I recall the stat correctly.

She's beyond washed up...she's washed, dried, folded and back in the closet.

When are people going to realize that every draw is actually rigged for Svetlana Kuznetsova?

Usually it is, but not this time. If rumors are true it's Justine-Serena, Sveta-Venus, Jelena-Anna and Ana-Dani quarter finals.

What will be interesting to see is how Ana follows up on her title at IW. Traditionally, she has had awful results in her next tournament following a championship. With her 5 previous titles, she only got beyond the R16 once in her follow up event (that was last year, when she won Berlin, then go to the finals of the French). Every other time, she lost very early in her next event.

Nice to see Vania handle her business. Julie Ditty could've been trouble and wasn't. I actually think Vania is a solid little player but she needs to work on handling the big stages better. She did pull out a clincher in Fed Cup but she was also facing Kristen Flipkins...

It's just a blurb so I'll put it here:

FREQUENT FLIERS
Nadal arrived in Miami in the wee hours Monday on a private plane from Indian Wells, Calif. Among the passengers on the plane was Ana Ivanovic, the Serbian world No. 2, who won the Indian Wells final on Saturday. Nadal lost in the semis to Novak Djokovic and decided to fly private. He had an extra seat on the plane and offered to let Ivanovic hitch a ride.
